    The ignore button

What is the point of it? Does it do its job properly?

The bad side of it is that you don't see posts from people you have ignored..................... until someone else quotes that post and then you do see it.

Missing the ignored posts can make the replies to them seem silly.

The good side is that you are able to miss most of the posts from the ignored people.

Should we ask if it is possible to also not see quotes from the ignored?

Agreed, if it allowed total ignoring of people it would avoid those occasional glimpses of madness that provoke reaction (see Leicester thread) Perhaps FM could consider this in the next system upgrade?

I don't see the point in ignore functions. Of course spam is irritating, but unless it reaches chronic levels where it forces real threads off the page I don't see what the big deal is. We all have an inbuilt ignore feature, it's called not taking the bait. If you feel someone has nothing of value to contribute, simply don't reply to them or even bother reading what they write. Are we all really so weak willed that we need moderators to handle this for us?

Easier said than done in my case - when I see persistent flouting of forum rules, or absolute idiocy, it really, as Peter Griffin would say, grinds my gears and I am unable to stop rising to the bait. Differing opinions I can handle, that I cannot.

Agree with Redacted, seeing a thread totally ruined by 'poster on ignore' messages is completely counterproductive imo and 'self censorship' is invariably the best way.
Having said that, when one sees abuse directed unreasonably at others - ironically especially new posters - it is difficult not to respond which is, to come full circle, why we need a new, reasonable and effective mod...or two.

Yes I've noticed some find it difficult to 'walk on by', we're all built differently I guess. I look on the bright side, and think how less full my life would be without being introduced to the concept of the 1-1 defeat

How about having a ban button so you can get rid of a poster for say like a week when you don't agree with what they've posted even if maybe they didn't actually break any rules or for a less draconian measure a feature where you click on a button and it would flag up the exact post you didn't agree with, you could even have a little drop down box where you could type a short explanation as to your disagreement, that could go straight to the mods or better still the site editor for a guaranteed response or action taken if deemed necessary, wouldn't that be a cool feature, that's like dragons den material right there!

With your first idea everyone would be banned within a week with mr "onto iignore you go" around 😁
