    Past season stats (two curios)

Just playing around with some data, I was able to calculate all of the home and away tables on any given date and also best attack and defence. Two interesting things came up.

Firstly, we were much more unlucky than I remembered to miss out on the inaugural Premier League in 1992 because we were not in the bottom three in the final home or away tables, nor goals scored or goals conceded. We actually had a better home record than Spurs that season.

Secondly, the 1970/71 team was 100% perfect, top of every table.

Allardyce comes close in 1998 but Macc Town had a better home record than us that season (12 points better!)........

Very curious stats those, especially the Mac one. Is that data you have collected/created yourself UTM? I was trying to find league tables by date today myself but to no avail.

You can view the league table from any date between August 1957 and May 2004 by changing the eight numbers at the end of the link in the address bar in yyyymmdd format, so for Charlie Palmer day add 19940212 after the question mark and that will return the state of play after the win v fword.

I wrote a couple of programs on notepad that compressed the fixtures to the point where each result (and the date it was played) is converted into just three characters, so "12/02/1994 Notts County 2 Nottingham Forest 1" becomes "BLg" and an entire season (all 24 clubs' 46 games) is crunched into 25 lines of 80 characters, a small block of gobbledigook which another program written on notepad then extracts into the webpage (ignoring all results played after the date in the address bar).

The spanner in the works is points deductions, you have to know exactly when these were made for the tables to be authentic, they're not necessarily deducted at the beginning or end of the season (Preston 1973/74 were docked a point just before Christmas), but I managed to sort that out.

Ah thanks for the tip UTM, appreciate that. Just working on a couple of new prediction models and want to see how they work out compared to actual results/league table etc.

    Cheers

If it's of any help, the full season's match by match league positions are now up for all clubs in whatever division we happened to be in. Click on a ball next to any team in the league table and it'll take you to their results (up to the date selected) with the league positions listed alongside them.

Example - Mansfield Town season 2004/05

Great stuff, thanks. Just checking and I'm struggling to find a link to tables? Obviously the final tables are below the season results but struggling to follow the example you gave ie Charlie Palmer Day? Sorry if I'm being really thick!

The link is shortened on this forum for display purposes so you need to change the date in the address bar on your browser after you've clicked on it.

The link below takes you to Notts on 30th June 1994 after all games have been played, so you can just change the year in the link for any season (from 1955 to 2006).
    http://carousel.royalwebhosting.net/...ml?19940630NCO
You can then click on a ball next to a result for the tables that day.

I haven't integrated the data pages into the site properly yet, so the buttons at the bottom of the pages will take you out of that area.

Edit: Refresh the page if you don't see the match by match league positions, you might have the old page cached.

Perfect, thanks. That will be really useful. I’ll also share a link to your home page on my site as it’s a great resource.

Cheers. I had added yours to my links page but forgot to upload the page. Probably Twitter is the best place to encourage site visits these days but as I'm on a limited bandwidth free package, I have to keep relatively quiet about it. Used to be on ntlworld from way back in 2001 until they closed it down. Jocky Scott was manager when I started it! Can't believe that's two decades ago now.

Just for info, this is quite good.

    https://www.11v11.com/league-tables/...november-2018/

But I’ve used this before for any date and league tables at that date.
