yep your right ftivano ,but there lies the spoils of one of the very few tory seated areas in scotland ,but what pees me off more is the cash involved in putting these extra pavement areas across from the lidle store with fancy circle garden boxes ,just to try to make that area look good ,what a waste of cash that is ,that cash could be used for better things no need for these garden creations lol .

The extra £11 million the council had to find to fix the DGONE building might of come in handy. Dumfries is a mess and it’s an embarrassment all right

Not a good idea to have a political debate as this may never end resulting in ceaseless diatribe.

We will just have to accept that the DG1 building is soaking up huge amounts of cash needed elsewhere. I didn't agree with the local Tories that the area should just be flattened as you just end up with a flattened piece of land ie nothing and still millions in cost . I don't know who was responsible for handing out the contract for the building of the leisure centre as we have been told very little . I'm guessing - though could be wrong- that the lowest tender for the project was accepted and what a complete balls up that was. The compensation money finally agreed with Keir Construction has been found to be far short of what it should have been to cover the re- building . Some of these top council people should hang there heads in shame especially when taking very good salaries for incompetence.

Agreed. Although it’s clear to me that the root of the problem is to be found in the austerity politics of our ruling yahoos.

Shggie, you say "I don't think it is something Jardi's group could undertake without specialist equipment including Health and Safety and probable insurance." - and you'd be right.

The problem is that the cleaning that was done a few years or so ago with a high pressure washer damaged the marble. The Italian marble should have been coated with a protective substance (possibly silicone) to prevent chemical ingress and mould attachment. I have pressed for months if not years to have the problem rectified and the proper treatment carried out so that one of our local window cleaners could give the statue a periodic clean to keep it in tip-top condition.

I have asked that the statue receives the appropriate treatment as soon as possible, but until that has been carried out there is nothing that can be done, - and even pure water 'allegedly' will cause further potential damage.

May I say that those with political axes to grind should take them elsewhere and let those with good old fashioned common sense sort out the urgent problems that this town faces.

Cleaning statues is a specialised process that requires complex procedures to avoid damaging the base material while cleaning the surface and certainly not by using the likes of high pressure washers etc. as Jardi has correctly stated. It requires contractors very experienced in this field and subsequently does not come cheap. Coating the cleaned marble with an anti fungal substance which could then be readily cleaned sounds the best solution but all of this needs to be left to the experts on this.
