    RIP Eric Barnes

Club has announced today that Eric Barnes, ex-Captain in the 60s, has died. He must have been a fair age as I vaguely remember him at Gresty Road in my early ****s.
Met him briefly about ten years or so ago and he seemed to be a very old man then. Nice old guy though.

A real gentleman. Saw him many times. Always a very calm, fair player.

Eric hardly ever got booked playing was 6ft6" and not many Centre forwards scored against him, even the Legend Frank Lord failed to when playing for Rochdale, before Crewe signed him and Wyn Davies Wrexham Welsh Cente forward failed also. After ending his career went on to play in the local league for Gorsty Hall i think! not may if any do that today.

I have many fond memories of Eric. I believe he arrived in Crewe the same year as I did, in 1958 and played his last game for the Alex the year I went off to college, so I had the great pleasure of watching almost all of his Crewe career. A splendid, fair footballer who must have shuddered at the antics of today’s players. An unsung hero. RIP.
