The traditions of the FA Cup

It looks like another round of disruptions when the 3rd round is upon us in January 2015. Games are due to be played on the 3rd January. The premier league will have a programme two days earlier on New Year’s Day.

Tradition went out the window years ago, even the fa cup final moved from it's 3pm kick off to late evening. - view external link

Course it won't mate, The Premier League has spent the last 22 odd years screwing over the traditions of Football in this country, and in no way for the better.

The village teams will be happy, the top clubs will send their third stringers onto the pitch, and the younger generations will be amused at what the fuss, or lack of interest, is all about. The reason primarily for the disinterest is in the heavy international schedule many of the big internationals take part in European competitions, international events, club vs club, matches with England squaring off against San Marino, etc! Too many matches, resulting injuries to bigs, friendlies, various Cup games, respective league fixtures, Internationals, etc...the market has become overly saturated. The public has become numb to it all.

I can remember dying for the draw to be broadcast and to see who we would be playing and in those days we were one of the really big teams to avoid or if a minnow club,to hope to get someone like Wolves so the extra money would help that club.Still get a buzz from the Cup ,it's a bit more honest than the Prem except those teams that pick the third squad.

The FA cup draw doesn't feel me with excitement as it used to do, it's too commercialised. The big problem is too much television exposure and also the league seen as the No.1 priority, but a good cup run should run hand in hand with the league.

Back in the day when the Cup meant something. You knew that barring injuries, you would see the regular first team, not some right winger from Outer Mongolia wearing the number 48 shirt.

You were guaranteed 3 things - a decent crowd, a muddy pitch, and plenty of excitement. - view external link

"...too much exposure..." Here's Wayne Rooney about to receive his 100th cap at age 29; I wonder how many of those 100 games will have been televised, either live or on delay, at least 90+ I'll wager!?:/

    ...if not all 100.

One of the death knells for the Competition was Manchester United withdrawing from the 1999/2000 competition, under pressure from the government AND the FA to play in a World Club Championship, that the FA believed Man U's involvement in would grease the wheels with FIFA for the 2006 World Cup to be held in England. It takes a lot more than that to sway Sepp and the boys as we all now know! but with this one act the FA devalued, probably irreversibly it's own competition!!
