Dunno, do you mean fat birds from the sub-continent or the big grey things with trunks?

Of course the insistence on using the "correct" word sometimes goes too far (although your example is not a particularly good one, as "Asian" is a more accurate description of the animal's range), but you can't apply this to the use of terms about ethnic background that are clearly offensive to the group concerned,
In another area where lots of heat has been generated (women's rights), insisting that the word "man-hole" should be changed to "person-hole" was clearly daft, but the fact is that a whole lot of vocabulary does confirm the traditional "inferiority" of women, and it is right that they should object to it.
"Political Correctness" is a dismissive term used far too often to gloss over behaviour/comments that really do imply unacceptable attitudes in a modern society. And words do hurt.

There's nothing wrong with it, but there's nothing wrong with "Asian" either, and it's more accurate.
Yours respectfully - from a "loony" to a dinosaur.

JR/Saxo - very few people know that "Snickers" is actually short for "Maggie Thatcher's knickers".
Personally, I won't touch the things.

I thought the all idea of the, Indian or African elephant was to distinguish between two sub-species. The Indian elephants ears are shaped like India. The African elephant's are shaped like Africa.

Still think Auckland is being dishonest in trying to disguise this in the of accuracy, it's perverted tolerance and fear of upsetting certain factions. African elephants have big ears and Indian ones have little ears. Auckland, old bean, is a power cut a power cut, or an outage? Are you a school teacher, or a civil servant?

Here's a question for you now. Of all the Chinese, Japanese friends of yours, of which I assume there are many, do they (each and every one of them) appreciate it when you refer to them as 'chinky'?
