Leicester City agree fee for Scotland international
Leicester City have agreed a fee for former Celtic and Aston Villa midfielder Shaun Maloney. The Foxes are understood to have agreed a £750,000 deal with Wigan Athletic for the 31-year old.

Maloney has spent much of his career north of the border with Scottish giants Celtic, but has brief Premier League experience from his brief stint at Aston Villa and Wigan Athletic.

The Scotland international will now enter talks with Leicester City and a deal is expected to be completed by the end of the week.

Maloney with becomes City’s third signing of the transfer window, following Mark Schwarzer and Andrej Kramaric to the King Power Stadium.

Wigan Athletic are keen on signing Queens Park Rangers winger Matt Phillips on loan, according to the Daily Mail.

Wigan are set to lose Shaun Maloney to Leicester City with the BBC reporting that a fee is agreed, and they may feel Phillips could replace the void that his departure would leave.

Phillips' pace and power has proven a threat at Championship level before and Wigan desperately need to start adding quality if they are to avoid the drop.

The Latics are currently placed in the bottom three and five points away from safety after an abysmal opening to the campaign.

Phillips, meanwhile, has been consigned to a peripheral role during the R's campaign to date - with most of his 12 appearances so far coming as a substitute.

At 22-years-old, the fact he is not playing regularly could be harmful for his development and Wigan may hope that QPR will jump at the chance to get him some game time at a competitive level.

Wigan are verging on losing winger Shaun Maloney to Premier League outfit Leicester City for £1 million and will need to replace their versatile Scot. Philips would only be a temporary replacement, but would certainly fill the gap left by Maloney.

Philips has a fantastic balance on pace and power to his his game, and is a very threatening winger who would give any defender a headache. He’s only made 10 appearances in the Premier League this season, five starts and five substitute appearances.

He was a big part in QPR’s campaign in the Championship last year, which was also his debut season in a Rangers shirt after arriving from Blackpool for £5 million, making 21 appearances and finding the back of the net three times.

Wigan have had a season from Hell this year, and also faced another deafeat over the weekend, playing Birmingham away. Clayton Donaldson’s hattrick doomed Wigan to a 3-1 defeat. City went 2-0 up after just 14 minutes, before a stunning strike from James McClean pulled

QPR winger Matty Phillips and Feyenoord frontman Mitchell te Vrede are said to be interesting the Latics during the January transfer window.
Latics manager Malky Mackay has made no secret of his desire to add fire power to his current squad and the expected departure of Shaun Maloney is expected to fee up the cash to move for both players.
Phillips is the cousin of current Wigan Athletic player Emmerson Boyce and has struggled for first team action with QPR this season.
The pacey forward is said to be available on loan until the end of the season and would be a fantastic capture for the Latics. Phillips showed his ability at Championship level during his time with QPR scoring three goals in twenty-one appearances last season.
He cost Rangers £5 million when he moved from fellow Championship club Blackpool the preceeding summer.
Meanwhile 23 year old forward Mitchell te Vrede is being linked with a move to the Latics after expressing his desire to leave Feyenoord.

Leicester manager Nigel Pearson's hopes of landing Wigan midfielder Shaun Maloney have fallen by the wayside.

The Foxes had agreed a fee with Wigan for Maloney, understood to be just over one million pound after an initial bid was rejected.

But the Scotland international will not be moving to the King Power Stadium after failing to agree personal terms.

Via Wigan's Twitter feed, manager Malky Mackay said: "We accepted a bid for Shaun Maloney, but the personal terms fell through. He's our player until the end of the season."
