No, you didn't make that up. Fans could certainly buy (or perhaps hire is more accurate) a cushion when it was the old wooden stand that burned down. There was a hut staffed on match days by two old ladies who hired out the cushions. What's more, I cannot recall ever seeing one of those cushions thrown onto the pitch. The dug outs were up next to the pitch and were small white shelters that could seat about 5 people in each and you could stand directly behind the dug outs.
