    Tributes paid to former Everton chairman Sir Philip Carter.


    Tributes have been paid to Sir Philip Carter, the most successful chairman in the history of Everton FC, who has died aged 87.

    Sir Philip joined the retailing division of Littlewoods after World War II where he progressed rapidly under John Moores' guidance.

    In 1976 he became managing director of the company, three years after he had become an Everton director, and in 1978 he was appointed chairman of Everton.

    Two league titles, an FA Cup and a first European trophy followed – plus defeats in the final of the Milk Cup and the FA Cup twice – heralding the most consistently successful spell the club had enjoyed since the 1930s.

    Everton chairman Bill Kenwright paid tribute to Sir Philip and said: "Words cannot describe my feelings of loss primarily as a friend but also as an Evertonian.
