Some were I believe, though it was nowhere near 500, anyway its all *******s and very simple to stop, just open legal routes and process them in calais as the French have offered, that way those that don't qualify can be stopped.

    Sounds mint doesn't it?
Yet the government and many in opposition seem to want it all to continue. You have to ask why?

Sunak, trys to do a deal with the EU about returns, like the Dublin agreement for those who have already applied elsewhere in Europe.
Yet the EU says to do that, you must agree to take in at least 30,000 illegal migrants a year or pay 20 ,000 euros for each one you don't.
Of course this is totally intolerant to Poland/Hungary at least, so conflict brewing there.

The elephant in the room, is the EU's lack of effort to stop it, or their selective response to attempts to stop it.
    1. Its ok now for Greece to push boats back, after allowing them to get swamped?
    2. Italy must let them in?
    3. Poland are fine to use the military when they come from Belarus, but must take them from the other countries?

The hypocrisy is surreal. All from Merkels single act.
Yes this government is crap and couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery. But like a castle under seige, we are making a dogs dinner of fefending the inner keep, whilst the EU allowed the moat and outer walls to be breeched.

Want a good read, try Douglas Murray.

Apart from the fact that those who don't qualify when processed in Calais will still just get on the boats anyway. So the problem doesn't disappear, it simply gets focussed on a hardcore of illegals who will know they have to go underground if they survive the journey.

I'd say you need to stop the access to boats by focussing on the supply of smugglers rather than the demand for smugglees.

Correct, most of those who come by boat, won't qualify in any way for asylum by normal routes.
The boats let them toss their ID away, make up a story and lie through their teeth.
Even if rejected, no ID means its nearly impossible to get shut of them. That's why so many get asylum, not because they qualify, but because the government doesn't know what the **** to do with them. They know this and make their TikToc videos showing their triumph.

So for that to work, everyone who comes by boat/lorry/train needs deporting back to the point of departation, no questions asked. Only then will it dry up.

ah but, yes but, no but....

Hopefully, photos, fingerprinting and conformation of their place of origin will be part of asylum process. Anybody turned down who then tries the small boat route into the UK will be recognised and can be sent back whence they came.

The issue with that is that those who know their chances of being granted asylum are minimal at best will skip the registration process and go straight to the small boat route...

That sort of comment (unqualified) usually comes from those who are either naive or have some agenda for maximising immigration.

'Open legal routes' won't stop those who know that they will fail via the legal routes. I don't know the split but it appears that those who will fail make up 'a signiicant amount' of the small boat crossings so the problem will remain.

'Open legal routes' also emanates (usually, although you may have a more sophisticated view) from those who can't then answer the question 'with what upper limit?'. If there is no upper limit or an huge one, that would be green light for a truly mass influx imo, if there is a low upper limit effectively the situation would be no different to now.

No problem with that whatsoever. It happens everywhere else I go.
Amazing though, how the normal legal routes are so stringent, yet the EU has the most porous borders in the world for everyone else.
The UK should be even easier to protect with a moat, but stick weak/liberal minded MP's in parliament, you may as well build an open bridge.

Oh dear me! Starmer actually says what has been obvious to all but a Tory government and their idiot voters, to stop the boats and the illegal people smugglers, its necessary to reach an agreement with the EU on a safe legal way for processing Asylum claims and have a return agreement so that those that don't qualify can be returned to other countries.

Of course the Tories and their supine, billionaire ex pat right wing press start bleating about Starmer being willing to allow 100,000 into the country, as if they hadn't noticed how many ahve been coming in via the boats with no control and no way of returning most who don't qualify!!

Like the renetry into the Horizon science programme, bit by bit the Uk has to face the reality and reengage with the EU.
