He's passed test 1 by at least admitting that there are millions of 'reluctant tories' out there, not sure how effective this tour of Northern seats will be, he and the Conservatives need to keep on delivering non-stop for five years and beyond. Labour are helping him in the early running by pretty much being in denial about defeat - some of the interviews I've seen have been embarrassing, the interviewee in one basically squealing 'its not fair!' Such a small opposition has got to be pin-sharp to hold the Government to account and they are a rabble at the moment.
RA I think your long-standing wish for the demise of the ERG will ironically be delivered by the sheer size of the result, all opposition PLUS ERG is less MPs than the less extreme Conservatives
‘I think your long standing wish for the demise of the ERG will ironically be delivered by the sheer size of the result.’
You’re not alone in that thought and I really, really hope you’re right.
Tbf McDonnell accepted responsibility pretty well on Marr this morning. I haven’t heard the ‘it’s not fair’ squealers. Sure there are some and the size of the majority is disproportionate to the increase in the Tory vote but that’s how it’ll be till the voting system changes and that’s probably been just as ‘unfair’ on others in the past.
Good to see you back anyway...rumours of your disappearance appear to have been exaggerated.
I know we've been at odds on stuff but the ERG and especially JRM were / are an embarrassment, I could never commit to a bloke who probably still has his chimneys cleaned by small boys
My absence has been just due to having a lot on, plus I didn't see there was much I could add on this thread. Just been watching out for trolls etc
There have been a number on R4 and R5L and an easier one to find (more simply in denial than 'its not fair') was a losing candidate on friday's newsnight. I notice also that Emily Thornbury has stuck her foot in her not inconsiderable mouth by describing ex-labour deserting voters as 'stupid'. Coached by Swale?
And so to the labour leadership issue. Seems Corbyn now, wants to hang on until 31-03. At this rate he will withdraw his resignation!
So we have many women stepping forward including Rebecca "Corbyn without a Beard" Long-Bailey, the preferred choice of Momentum.
Seems like some people never learn
Long-Bailey appears to be the current leadership’s candidate of choice, but if ‘Becky’ - as McDonnell refers to her - is chosen that will, for me, be the final nail in the Labour coffin.
She does indeed appear to me to be Corbyn Mk II and equally unelectable.
There are some very good and principled people within the Labour Party...I suspect they may have to form a new Party if lessons aren’t learned quickly and the £3 membership continues it’s, at best ‘adventurist’ and at worst, totally malicious work.
Starmer or Nandy for me, but there are others. Don’t subscribe to the idea that it ‘should’ be a woman. It should just be the best candidate imo.

First of all, I had a dream last night. I was watching BBC Breakfast and they suddenly stopped with the script and announce "Breaking News", Diane Abbott had announced her resignation. Where that came from, I have no idea. I remember being surprised at the news in my dream as she seems well loved by her constituents (33K majority).
Gareth Snell who lost his seat in Stoke conceded defeat within an hour of the polls closing, way before the result was announced. Interviewed on the beeb prior to the result being known he said that he knew he had lost. When asked if he thought it was Jeremy Corbyn who had led to his probable downfall, his answer was one word YES! Corbyn has to go. The press have done their job very well over the past God knows how many years convincing people that he is a terrorist in sheep's clothing and they have swallowed it hook, line and sinker. Labour also did not help themselves. Their manifesto read beautifully for the most part and the only question that had to be asked was which bits you don't like. Two things stood out. The "dodging the bullet" stance on Brexit and the apparent loosening (or even ditching if you believe the red tops) of immigration controls. Those are, IMO, the 2 things that from the manifesto that shot the party in the foot. Statements from the past on things like the Falklands and Trident are also still in people's minds and didn't help them. The other major reason was that there were too many "goodies" in the manifesto and people had the forethought to come to the conclusion that it all sounded very nice to have but.......... it was always going to cost more than was sensible financially for two Parliamentary terms never mind just the one.
Labout has to change tack if it is to be a credible alternative to the Tories IMO. I also think that Momentum has too strong a hold on the party for that to happen. Unless something happens to wrest control back into "mainstream Labour" the Tories will be celebrating success for several elections to come.
Wrong Daily is Corbyns protege. A mini me in a skirt.
To select this blinkered dope, will just condemn Labour to the gutter and confirm to me that the party has not got a ****ing clue what the average person wants.
Corbynism is dead. They either accept that or die a death.
Personally, they won't change. Corbyn/momentum/unions have waited a long time to get a strangle hold on Labour.
It's either winning on their terms or nothing.
Closed shop/club now. Time to break it up with a new party.
Corbyns group will become a bit party, if the hard core Labour voter had an alternative.
