    O/T Dumfries Question

Can anyone , without googling it , tell us all where the sandstone was quarried from to build arguably Dumfries's most iconic building , the Mid Steeple ?

I haven't googled it, but remember reading in "The History of Dumfries" that some of the stone used was from Dumfries's earliest Prison (built in the 1500's) and these stones had been stored at Hoddam for 100 years (the Midsteeple being constructed in the early 1700's). There was also a mention that some of the stone came from Castledykes quarry. The wood for the building I remember reading came from the Stewartry. Obviously it wasn't built by the same mob that built DG1 as it's still standing!

You have a good knowledge of your town Lord P. I was in the back ' garden' of Castledykes . The square that is in the deepest part of the Castledykes area. A plaque on a piece of sandstone embedded in the ground says that the stone excavated from that particular area of the park was used to build the Midsteeple. An interesting fact for a proud Doonhamer like myself and people like you also. Did you also know the Midsteeple has also been used as a prison and as a store for the towns supply of gunpowder and ammunition in the past.

Really interesting thread for an exiled Doonhamer like me.
    Thanks for posting.
