Sat down with my mate and his grandson and said to grandson " last time I sat with you we won 7:1 hope you are a good omen today!".........
I can think of another in recent ( ish) history
Not quite as rare as you might think, JRS, although, sadly, defeats by seven goals and more are even more common. I remember in the early 1960s we lost 0-7 to Kilmarnock at Rugby Park in the league. Only a few weeks later we met them again at Rugby Park in the Cup. George Farm, our goalkeeper was stretchered off. I think it was John Murphy who took over in goals (no substitutes in those days) and we obtained a hard earned 0-0 draw. We beat Kilmarnock 1-0 in the replay at Palmerston the following week. Oh happy days. I also recall in the late 1940s we took eight off St Mirren at Palmerston only to lose seven to the same team in the same league cup competition: and there were similar home and away results against Partick Thistle a year or two later. In the same league cup competition that we beat/lost to St Mirren I had the misfortune to be at Aberdeen when Aberdeen scored nine against us. On that occasion Willie Wilson, our goalkeeper, broke his finger and, of course, there were again no substitutes.
B and Q Cup at Montrose we won 7 - 4 in 1991 after extra time - Jimmy McGuire got FOUR if I remember correctly
The Kilmarnock game where Farm was injured, Neil Martin took over in goals..... then winter set in big time (1963) and it was several weeks with no football, allowing Farm's broken rib/ribs time to heal before the replay..... Queens won the replay 1-0 (Johnny Frye) in front of 10,000 for a midweek replay......
Those St Mirren games were SIXTY - NINE years ago and I presume that Cresswell was a young lad then so I take my hat off to you sir for having an amazing memory of these high - scoring matches.
