WTF does a 'Director of football' mean, is it a manager or a coach or both... or what ??

Director of football is supposed to be a mediator between coach / manger to the board so the coach / manager can get on with coaching / managing the players/
But we all know Sherwood is an out of work buddy of our chaiman and our Head Coach is failing miserably.
He did sort of all right at Spurs but sh!te at Villa. But I don't expect much so I won't be dissapointed
