Dave King yesterday revealed that four people “linked to organised crime and money laundering” had bought
into Rangers as well as an American firm allegedly involved in “criminality.
The club's chairman divulged the Ibrox side’s crime ties in court before agreeing to offer up to £19 million of his own money to buy out shareholders by January 25.
A court had previously ordered King to mount a potential buyout of shareholders following legal action by the Takeover Panel financial watchdog.
The businessman explained how various large shareholders had agreed not take up the invitation to sell him their stock.
King, 63, then outlined how four individuals holding shares were prevented from selling them due to anti-money laundering laws.
The matter had been discussed at a Rangers board meeting on Monday, the Court of Session in Edinburgh heard.
King revealed it had been left as “opaque as possible” who the “underlying beneficiaries of these shareholdings” actually are.
The identities of the four were not disclosed in court, nor how long they had held their shares.
King said they were “linked to organised crime and money laundering”, adding that "share offer funds could not be transferred to these four individuals under anti-money laundering legislation”.
He added: “It’s not possible for these four individuals to accept an offer.”
The club secretary has been instructed that their shares couldn’t be transferred, the court heard.
Giving evidence on the witness stand, King also told how a firm owning Rangers shares called BNL had been involved in alleged “criminality in the United States”. He added: “There was intervention by the authorities and they have been put into administration.”
Following negotiations with the Takeover Panel during the lunchbreak, King signed an undertaking to offer a buyout.
He agreed to a series of deadlines to finalise the share deal by next month, apparently conceding to the Takeover Panel’s demands and telling judge Lady Wolffe he was “100 per cent” ready to make the offer.
But the South African entrepreneur said he didn’t expect the offer to trigger a large-scale sale of shares to him.
The court heard King had amassed legal undertakings or pledges from around 48.25 per cent of the shareholding not to sell.
Some of the remaining 17.7 per cent were held in small amounts by thousands of supporters who King felt wouldn’t sell as they “just want to own part of the club”.
King previously said he was having difficulty transferring buyout money to the UK due to South African “exchange control regulations”.
He appeared yesterday for the hearing to decide if he was in contempt of court for failing to make the legally mandated offer.
Although he accepted the full £19m may need to be transferred into the UK, King told the court he hoped to negotiate a smaller amount if possible due to the undertakings he’d collected from shareholders not to sell.
On Thursday, Christopher Jillings, deputy director general of the Takeover Panel, gave evidence that King had “uniquely” chosen not to hire advisors who knew the takeover code, or nominate a “cash confirmer” to ring fence the money which may be needed to pay shareholders.
Under the signed undertaking, King has now agreed to find a cash confirmer in the UK and an expert legal advisor by December 14.
He pledged to engage with the South African exchange control authorities to have the funds moved to the UK by January 11, and offer the Rangers share deal by 5.30pm on January 25.

Is the clock still ticking?Rangers lead the way in Scotland with borrowings of £22.5million as per their most recent set of accounts for the year 2017-2018. It is in excess of £10million more than rivals Celtic whose borrowings are £10.8million.
