Right lads, I read this fact in a recent home programme. The piece said Queen of the South and Port Vale are the only two British teams that don't have names attributed to their town , city or area. I'm sure you all know that a politician once stood up in parliament mentioning the ' Queen of the south' when talking about Dumfries and the name stuck for the town then getting passed on to our team. Port Vale were so called because of the abundance of ports in that area of England and not anything to do with Stoke . I then googled Raith Rovers as I thought that was another one but Raith was an ancient name for the stretch of land going from Kircaldy to Lochgelly. Ed qos threw a spanner in the works with his Albion Rovers suggestion. After a bit of checking , Albion got their name from an amalgamation of two local Coatbridge sides and so thats another. To sum up , I believe that Qos , Albion Rovers and Port Vale are the three unique senior sides in Britain of having names that are not connected by name to the town, city or area they come from.

Jings, I was nearly right! After I posted I went through all 4 English leagues testing my theory but didn't spot Port Vale....

Personally would have included Raith Rovers and also Clyde who have been in Cumbernauld for years now. Also interesting that they call stops along the Trent canal system '' ports '' - you live and learn.

Ah, my old friend, I have said about the stretch of Fife land called Raith ( meaning fort or fortified land ) relating to Raith Rovers name. Clyde' s origin was Rutherglen so that still stands relating to them . You could argue as you do that ' Clyde' is nothing to do with Cumbernauld I suppose .

Have I missed something here - Celtic,Rangers and Arsenal and I'm sure there are more !

You could argue about this thread all day long - for instance Partick Thistle based in Maryhill in the north of Glasgow havn't played in Partick for over a 100 years
