Why do some get all excited about another country's patron saint?

A thread about St Patrick's Day on an England forum. God, the irony.

I hope we thrash the Irish this weekend, as I do with any sport, any country.

No wonder we are walked over as a nation.

I'll apologise on a personal level, be proud of you heritage.

You haven't offended me at all, I'm just sick of the annual "Let's be Irish for a day, wear green and LOOOVVE Guinness for a day, hey my great great grandad had an Irish Setter once, whoah, it is their country after all" brigade.
Some tw@t at work said to me yesterday, "I'm off tomorrow for my yearly Guinness fill."
I asked why, you are English and pubs sell Guinness all year round.

But hey, I'm sure the Irish, Scottish and Welsh will be falling over each other to post on here April 23rd.
