Difficult to say since their a lot of good painting out there. I wouldn't get anything new though paintings before the 20th century generally told a story every time you looked at the piece of work you could see something new about the period that you didn't know before.

Art now days may or may not tell a story but if it does it's no where near as in depth as the earlier works of human society.
