Not a pretty first half but big improvement after the break for a much needed win.
A repeat next week would make the international window a bit more tolerable.
The important thing was to get a win and we did that. Very much a game of two halves and a shocking first 45 was balanced out by a better second 45. Hopefully the addition of the expected two new faces will freshen things up somewhat.
Indeed, very well done to SR for the switch. He's not scared to change things, certainly.
It also highlighted the way I'm convinced most games in our league are won and lost...for all that we were poor in the first period, we didn't do anything truly suicidal. County on the other hand absolutely chucked us the opening goal, the way we have handed out gifts in the previous games. They followed up by missing a gimmie, just as we did against Rangers - result is they lose a close one, we win a close one.
Performances will help tilt the balance in your favour of course but I've a theory/hunch that people are so used to watching high quality games on telly these days, they take the attributes needed to win matches at that level and assume it's the same ours. It doesn't, or only rarely, applies imho and certainly not for those targeting survival. If your defence doesn't boot the ball in your own net or present the opposition with sitters, not being able to pass the ball 10 yards hardly matters (to the result - clearly watching it is brutal). You'll stay in the game and then, as often as not, the opposition will hand it to you on a plate with a mistake of their own.
The first half was honestly one of the worst team performances that I have ever seen us turn in and get away with being level at the break. Our passing, ball retention and tackling was five a side standard and only a fine save from Griffiths and Ross County's final ball being as bad as ours prevented us going in at least two goals down.
Huge credit therefore must go to Steve Robinson for recognising he'd got it wrong and making a bold double substitution at half time which turned the game on its head. Fisher and Tanner were dreadfully ineffective and Campbell and Bowman made immediate impacts and we suddenly found ourselves getting some attacking joy down the left through Bowman who completely unsettled their defensive gameplay. It was good to see Tait rewarded for a good display with a goal and to finally see Moult off the mark for the season.
It wasn't a great performance by any stretch of the imagination and we've got a lot of work to do still, not least to establish what our strongest line up and formation are, but that was a huge three points for us which we badly needed and we even managed a clean sheet into the bargain.
Huge credit to the manager for making the changes at halftime, yes we rode our luck in the first half and should have gone in at least a goal down. But Robinson unlike his predecessor saw what was wrong in our play and made the necessary changes at the correct time.Think Frear and McHugh will only make the team stronger when they both return, and suspect the manager now has a fair idea of his strongest starting eleven.Just hope he gets to play his strongest team on a regular basis.
