    McLean really does get a bad press generally and horrible abuse from opposition fans.

    People always spout on about "free speech" but many of them don't like people like James for having their own beliefs and standing by their beliefs.

    I may not agree with his politics but I admire his refusal to cave in just to suit other people as well as his utter commitment to the team cause and his well documented acts of kindness for which he seeks no publicity.

    There's a lot to admire in this guy,one day he might get the credit he deserves but I suspect he doesn't need that and is comfortable within his own heart.

    Got motm for Ireland tonight against Georgia..by a mile for his never give up attitude....in an other wise shyte team effort...
    Probably the most consistent player over the last few years for Ireland....

    In the words of Voltaire "I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it."

    If James was a bit of a prima donna I don't think we would put up with the poppy/anthem incidents. But he is a passionate person who gives 100% and has a kind heart somewhere under that toughness, which shows that he did not do those things to cause trouble or for the publicity, he did them because he believed (rightly or wrongly) that they were the right things to do.

    He is nowhere near the best LW we have had, but you can never question his commitment.
