We were incredibly fortunate to win this game, that deflection off SJ's heel goes in and we're well & truly on the backfoot - Murphy allowed an unchallenged header when he's the only player in our box with 5 Villa shirts around him. Some really bad decision making from Whelan with his passing that put us under pressure, their number 6 ran the show 2nd half and no-one tracked his runs.

Feels a bit like when Bruce took over, we scraped a run of results largely due to good fortune and the opposition know his approach, making us easy to play against.

Positives - JT's cool head, Snodgrass' working his socks off, Adomah looking very confident, SJ assured in goal.

Ya make your own luck and Chester put just enough pressure on Murphy for him to miss. We were always gonna be under pressure from a team desperate for an equaliser, with nothing to lose gungho attacking. Granted we looked shabby at times, but not shabby enough to concede.
Nothing fortunate about either of our goals, unlike their pinball ricochet that let Murphy in. Johnstone kept the ball out with his legs, deliberately positioned himself to block. It would’ve been ‘incredibly unfortunate’ had a second ricochet gone their way.
I think ‘incredibly fortunate’ is a bit harsh WCV, but hey, we all have our own views, and rightly so mate.

I have been angry for years at the lack of goals from midfield. When you see Hogg, Bannon, Davis and Johnston all allowed to leave and have decent careers and the managers that let them go think Reo-Coker, Erik Bakke, Leonhardson (was that his name?)and Bacuna are better players.

Statesie, Re Hogg, Bannan, Davis and Johnston. Davis along with Cahill should never have been aloud to leave. Hogg, Bannan and Johnson had Petrov, Barry, Milner, Downing, Delph and Young in front of them. Wee Barry Bannan had a fondness for a party or ten, judging by the photos that emerged every week, and had to be moved on. All bar Cahill are big fish in a smaller pond at the moment, but were being suffocated in our youth teams. There is however a common denominator linking all of their exits, including Cahill, and the judgement of the manager of the day, but that’s a hornets nest that I’ll resist to poke.

Hogg made his debut under Houllier. He had a fine debut and then the next thing we know he's gone. He had a fine career at Huddersfield. Sean Dyche this weekend said that Hogg saved his managerial career at Watford.

I do not believe that Forest ‘played us off the park’. Stats can be misleading, and can support any agenda. The possession stats show them with 64%, most of which we conceded to them as they were in their own half, stroking the ball across the back four. Do teams get extra points at the end of the season for possession stats? Can teams win matches stroking the ball across their back 4?
They had two 10 min productive spells at the beginning of each half and scored once. We had 3 or 4 spells and scored twice, with a rusty returning CF alongside a 19 year old novice CF.
Our keeper did what he gets paid to do and saved a free kick, theirs didn’t.
The main ‘stat’ and the only one that counts in football reads that we scored more and WON!!

I really looked forward to a Villa match for the first time in YEARS!!!!
I was still confident of winning after they equalised
I’m happy that we won
I celebrated the goals and the final whistle (instead of the horrible ‘PHEW’)
I can see improvement, not the finished article but improvement.
There’s too much searching for negativity going on, we’ve had reason to sulk and criticise for the last ten years. We achieved the object of a football match, we scored more than the opposition, we won!

Love this post, Exiled, especially where you say you celebrated the goals and the final whistle instead of the horrible phew! It's been a while.

Probably because I still have to add up on my fingers, the only stat I ever look at is the final score, and it looked most fine and dandy to me.
