Pope 6 Still early days but another PL home clean sheet. Good catch and punch when under pressure.
Lowton 6 Not quite as assured as normal but kept things tight down his side
Ward 7 Another solid display and tried to get forward when he could
Tarkowski 7 Solid. Took one for the team when Huddersfield threatened to break through at the death.
Mee 6 Stuck well to a big combative striker. Poor distribution a couple of times stopped momentum.
Brady 6 Plenty of the ball and energetic. Some lax passing.
Cork 7 Took him a while to get into the game and neat again in his passing and prompting
Defour 9 The only player on top of his game. All over the park and stood out defensively. What little creative play came from him.
Arfield 7 Faded second half but at least tried to be inventive.
Hendrick 4 Failed to find any space or work hard enough for the ball. The first was the problem today, the second down to lack of match fitness
Wood 6 Left isolated and up against two strong central defenders. One decent low shot but a big miss with a first half header.

Overall , a point earned against a side who have only conceded 2 goals in their first 6 PL games. It wasn't an inspiring Burnley performance and we didn't do enough to win the game. Huddersfield came for a point

Pope 8 They didn't score, so the very least he deserves
Lowton 6 OK, did his job but little more
Ward 5 perhaps tried but constantly failed to get forward the ball invariably then stopped and/or went backwards
    Tarkowski 7 Solid.
    Mee 6 See Lowton above
Brady 7 Always looked to be trying hard at least. Some good free-kicks, wasted by the front men repeatedly falling foul of an offside-trap that was simple enough for most schoolboys to have worked out/beaten before the end of ninety minutes
Cork 6 Worked hard but too easily knocked off the ball
Defour 9 The difference between 0-0 and ignominious defeat
Arfield 6 Tried but too often failed
    Hendrick 3 Just dire.
Wood 5 - constantly looked a yard short and smothered, though I think that the lad covering him had a great game?

With no pace upfront Huddersfield could push their defensive line well forward secure in the knowledge that none of the Burnley front line were ever going to outrun them in a long-ball chase; for all his failings, that's something that we've lost with Gray's departure.

    My effort:
    Burnley (4-4-1-1): Pope 6.5; Lowton 6, Tarkowski 7, Mee 7, Ward 6; Arfield 6.5 (Gudmundsson 77), Cork 6.5, Defour 7.5, Brady 6; Hendrick 5 (Barnes 74, 6); Wood 6.

Hendrick is not equipped to play in the role he was given. Better just going for a 4-4-2 with Wood dropping a bit deeper and Vokes winning all of the headers, flick-ons and knock-ons.

I'm fast coming to the conclusion that Hendrick is not equipped to play PL football in any role. For what it's worth, poor as he is in this 'floating' role, imo he was even worse at CM in a 4 man midfield last season.

    soccersouls make Ward tops

    Burnley Player Ratings

    Nick Pope – 6.5/10
Did not have a lot to do in goal, but was assertive when he needed to be. A couple of long balls launched the attacks as well.

    Matthew Lowton – 6/10
Did not offer a whole lot going forward, except for a late cross to pick out Barnes. Was defensively sound as always.

    James Tarkowski – 6.5/10
Won all of his aerial duels at the back and continued his strong run in defence. Was booked late on for a needless foul in a dangerous area.

    Ben Mee – 6.5/10
The 27-year old too was fairly solid at the back, but gave away a couple of unnecessary fouls. His distribution from the back was good.

    Stephen Ward – 7/10
Was Burnley’s best outlet going forward, sending in a number of inviting crosses into the box, one of which Wood headed wide when he should have scored. Steady display.

    Scott Arfield – 6/10
Was booked in the first-half. Switched flanks with Robbie Brady and had a couple of decent moments, but never really looked like opening up his former team.

    Jeff Hendrick – 6/10
Ran about in the midfield without really having a telling impact on the game. A few neat passes aside, he didn’t do anything noteworthy.

    Jack Cork – 6/10
Was booked as early as the 7th minute and walked on a tightrope all game long. Made a few important interceptions, but lost the ball a little more than he would have liked to.

    Steven Defour – 6/10
Solid from the Belgian, if not spectacular. Made the most interceptions in the game as well (4). A nice pass to Lowton to release the right-back and a dangerous cross from deep aside, there was not much attacking output.

    Robbie Brady – 6/10
His set-piece deliveries were inconsistent. While there were glimpses of nice link-up play, he did not do enough to carve out a clear-cut opportunity.

    Chris Wood – 6/10
Headed wide from a promising position in the first period. Was always a target at the top and won the most number aerial duels in the game (10). But he probably needed someone to play off him. Worked really hard.

    Substitutes
    Ashley Barnes – N/A
Replaced Hendrick in the 74th minute. Couldn’t make a telling impact.

    Johann Berg-Gudmundsson – N/A
Came on for Arfield in the 77th

    LET rate Defour best

    Nick Pope 7
Confidence boosting early claim from a corner and then two solid second half saves as Huddersfield upped their game.

    Matt Lowton 6
Quiet for large part of the game but tested by van La Parra late on down his side. Rightly enraged by his dive.

    James Tarkowski 6
Probably his most routine afternoon so far this season, but distribution was overly ambitious at times.

    Ben Mee 7
Defended well and was aggressive in the air against Depoitre. Never really troubled.

    Stephen Ward 7
Got forward well, especially first half. Cross for Wood’s headed chance was right on the money.

    Scott Arfield 7
Always involved in the game either out wide or coming inside to try and make things happen.

    Jack Cork 6
Not at his best and perhaps restricted by an early booking. Didn’t have his usual control in midfield.

Steven Defour 7 (Man of the Match)
The one man who really drove the Clarets forward at times. Very diligent in his defensive work as well, harrying Huddersfield’s forward runners.

    Robbie Brady 6
Worked hard defensively and had his moments going forward, but could never product that moment of quality the game needed.

    Jeff Hendrick 6
Still working his way back to full fitness but showed glimpses, particularly with some sharp footwork in the second half.

    Chris Wood 6
Should have done better with a header from Ward’s cross in the first half, but aside from that service was limited.

    Subs

    Ashley Barnes for Hendrick (74)
Johann Berg Gudmundsson for Arfield (77)

Subs not used: Adam Legzdins, Phil Bardsley, Kevin Long, Ashley Westwood, Sam Vokes
