I think MikSB point was on about players sold for a decent fee who have come through the academy and not just sold to get them off the books.
If you follow MikeSB line of thought then the academy is a gamble by spending a large sum each year and hoping for a return in 10-15 years down the line . Could the money be better spent in the short term on the 1st team ? . I see Huddersfield have done away with there academy as they feel it cannot produce players for the premiership and we seem to be having the same discussion on this site. The board are the only ones who can change things , nearly 30 years ago they were brave and backed DG in his vision. Its time to have a new vision I think as football has moved on a lot in that time .

One answer could be to scrap the academy and cherry pick young players that have been discarded by bigger clubs. We have been able to do this before we totally relied on kids coming through. I.e. Lennon, ward ,savage and platt
