    The national team

Typical Scottish drama taking a very late goal to maintain our hope of a playoff spot for Russia 2018. As ever it will inevitably go down to the wire on Sunday away to Slovenia and we will once again be put through the wringer but for once after far to long we may just get the rub of the green and return to the top table of football after being absent for far too long. Come on Scotland do it for the nation as it is far too long overdue.

Well, no iffs or buts now. With that result today of Bosnia 3 Belgium 4 , it means no results elsewhere will matter as long as Scotland WIN tomorrow. Yes, a play off place is in touching distance but we have to beat Slovenia who haven't conceded at home yet in this qualifying campaign.

Let's hope the national team can get that win tomorrow night and get into the play-offs with no doubt a tough nation awaiting us.

No doubt it will be another ninety minutes of finger nail threshing agony against a potentially stuffy team like Slovenia but we are long overdue a result. The performances of the last 12 months more than earn the squad a playoff spot. Come on Scotland and I may even forgive you if you wear those bloody awful pink tops for this most important of games- put a spring in our steps for tomorrow morning!!!!!

Why did Strachan not throw on two subs at half time as Slovenia had, like Callum McGregor and one other for instance, instead of Anya and then Snodgrass & Fletcher far too late in the game?

He should have freshened up the team right from the start, utilising players like McGinn who would have been straining at the leash to make an impact.

Like a politician terrified to make a mistake, he went for the tried and tested, but unfortunately they were, tried, tested and totally knackered.

As always, - it's far too easy to criticise from the side-lines, - but in my humble opinion, you will not get the best out of players who have already given you 100% just 72 hours earlier, followed by a 3 to 4 hour plane journey.

Strachan stated in the press that he would not be bullied by the media into playing fresh faces, - so Slovenia knew exactly what to expect and therefore how to set out their stall.

That was like Naysmith telling the world that Martin was not fit!

Good managers should keep their counsel, they should certainly not give the opposition an advantage by telling them what he is going to do in advance, - and he should always have something up his sleeve to surprise the other team.

There's only one crumb of comfort.....Scotland are not as boring as England!

When you get that one golden chance , you have to be brave , be aggressive, don't have any regrets . I said at work beforehand that Strachan would not have the balls to play this game like the ultimate cup tie . Instead , we try to sit in , play tactically and it doesn't work . As for the selection , he was always going to go for the limited old ( tired) guard in midfield. McGinn and McGregor are form players and straining at the leash but we're probably too adventurous for him. Again, we get our hopes up only to be beaten down with a sledgehammer come the ***** moment.

I wonder how many of the 28 players Strachan used in this latest campaign failure will still be in contention for inclusion in the squad when the Euro 2020 qualification games commence ?
