sort of an odd one, outwood....Love - Love/Hate, as Daesh - also hate Daesh. It being an acronym for al-Dawla al-Islamiya al-Iraq al-Sham (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant....ISIS) - because the word Daesh is considered too close to the word "Daes" meaning to crush something under foot, or "Dahes" one who sows discord.
....as i read it, the word was first used in 2015 by the then Aussi PM, Tony Abbott.....who broadcast that he would begin referring to the Islamic State group by that name saying: "Daesh hates being referred to by this term, and what they don't like has an instinctive appeal to me." and for that reason - so it caught on.

I'm fairly sure Norder that Daesh was in use before 2015, certainly in the Arabic speaking world.

I couldn't say and dont know....Sinkov - all I know Daesh as is the abbreviation.

from what I read - the origins of Islamic State ($)....idea began with a Jordainian named Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in 89 - met Bin Laden in 99...but didn't join al-Qaeda - he was unffiliated until 2003 when he set up a forerunner group named Jama’at al-Tawhid w’al-Jihad (the Party of Monotheism and Jihad) - mainly targeted at Shiite muslims.
Fly forward to 2011....and we get AQI (al-Qaeda Iraq)...run by a Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi - the sons of Iraq (ISI)...who moved on against the Shiites of Syria....where he renamed the group - the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

    Cheers.
