I think he has the attributes to be a good defensive midfielder but he looks shot at the moment. Maybe he needs a break from football for a few weekends to refresh a bit. Either way, this season he hasn't performed well enough to get into our starting IX let alone England's.

To be fair i'm struggling to see what attributes he has. His career stats are appalling . As a defensive midfielder he is one of the worst we've had in recent times. Not half the player as Mulumbu, Sharner or Yacob. At least they let the opposition know they were on the pitch.

I don't think he is being helped by our current midfield set up but he is certainly not a defensive midfielder as he doesn't put hardly any tackles in and his passing has been really poor, hopefully now he has been left out of the England squad Pulis will leave him on our bench and play a more balanced midfield.

Agreed. his tackles are more like token gestures.
Thing is he is not a central or attacking midfielder either. He doesn't assist or score goals. Never has. Shouldn't even be on the bench as he can offer nothing as a substitute.
The fact that he got an England recall in the first place says more about Gareth Southgate than it does about him.

Agree totally Whicka , what ive seen of him he brings nothing to the table for us , the few England games ive seen him neat & tidy thats about it , nothing to excite, another great pulis buy ,
