In Brittain there are no bank holidays to celebrate the end of the 2 world wars there is just a 2 minute silence at 11 o'clock on November the 11th. In France they have a bank holiday for the 2. Yesterday at the monument de mort there were less than 50 people there from a population of 850. There were 4 Brits in the group who stood in the rain and paid our respects. None were under the age of 40.

The armed forces are not respected here as they are in Brittain and other parts of the world. In fact most people hide the fact that they serve or serve. They are looked down upon as if they are the un educated because the army is seen as a last chance of gaurenteed employment.
We must though remember that being occupied is something the Brittish manfully avoided. For this alone we owe our respects to those who died. You can clearly see the tension between families that goes back tou the period of occupation. You see there is another monument de mort in each village. In ours it's a seperate one, one that stands in the point of execution! There were people who died fighting for the resistance. For us they would be welcomed onto the main monument but alas they are not here. You see those peole who were in the resistance were helping us but in their villages where they caused havock or insult to the Germans or the Vichy they were punished by the execution of local people. The disregard and the deliberate act of splitting the population by killing someone for the actions of another divided villages. These scares ar e still there today.

We will never understand the feelings of those who suffered occupation thankfully but the victims of that will never understand the feeling of pride we had for our men and woment that lost their lives.

Very true Frog and very well put.

For me anyone who is in the forces or served in the forces should be proud.
My brother in law has just retired and he misses it already.
Thanks for those that have sacrificed there own lives is all that we can do and pay our respects.

Why is it necessary to state political views on this thread.
Every time this dingle comes, on it has a political angle.A very twisted view of life, who must be a very sad person. This is a football message board, not a platform to spread extremist propaganda.Go back to the Barnsley board if you have nothing, football related to write about !!! Why come on a Millers message board? I wouldn't want to pollute the Barnsley message board with the rubbish that you put on here.So why come on here?

To be fair he doesn't have extremist views, at all, from what i've read, you must have a warped sense of politics if you think that way...anyway, as far as i'm concerned i see myself as left wing, a socialist, i see the futility of all wars to be honest, i also think that any British soldier killed in any conflict should be given the same respect as any other, remember that the armed forces are sent to war by politicians, so are just doing their job, whether we agree with that war or not.

As for the poppy bullies, its upto the individual to decide if they wanna wear the poppy or not, it's not compulsory and folk can have an opinion on it regardless of the poppy bullies wanting to force everyone in the country to wear them. Personally over the last few years touring Europe, i've paid my own respects visiting the cemetaries large and small across northern France and Belgium, visiting the big ones like Tyne Cot, Thiepval etc, the normandy ones from WW2, and many many small ones often in the middle of fields, kept in pristine condition by the French, and it's a very very humbling experience, don't ever ever let anyone tell you that you're unpatriotic because you're a socialist.....
