    United Fulham 5 - report

United suffered their first home defeat since September as they went down to a surprise loss to Fulham at the Lane. In an incredible game, United started well with a goal from Leon Clarke after good work from John Fleck. However, suddenly after a Carter Vickers howler gifted a goal to Ojo and a fine strike from Ryan Sessengnon the Blades were 2-1 down. Clarke hit back with another strike but then Sessengnon scored another and incredibly it was 3-2. United went for it in the second half but further goals from Ojo and Sessengnon on the break; for his hat trick; saw the game seemingly done and dusted at 5-2. However, it is not in United’s make up to lie down and Carruthers and then Clarke again; with another hat trick; made it 5-4. The late comeback did not see a fifth United goal and Fulham took all three points in an incredibly entertaining game.

It was the first time United had let 5 goals in since Chris Wilder has been manager and doubled the amount they had conceded so far, this season at home. It was also Fulham’s first win at the Lane since 1985 and the days of Ian Porterfield.

Missing Paul Coutts for the season, manager Chris Wilder unsurprisingly replaced him with John Lundstram in midfield. There was a place for James Hanson on the bench. Fulham had Kevin McDonald back from suspension but talented midfielder Johansen was only given a place on the bench.

The game began with Fulham set up with a three-pronged attack with Ojo, Sessegnon and Ayite all in the forward positions. The visitors had plenty of the ball early on and there were a few sloppy moments from United on the ball but gradually the home side started to come into it and on 6 minutes they took the lead. Duffy played it on to Fleck who advanced into the attacking area and hit a driven shot that Button could only parry and CLARKE was onto it and converted from close range.

Fulham came back instantly and after sloppy marking, they cut in past Stevens and Blackman had to make a great save to deny Ojo at point blank range. The game saw both teams have a lot of time on the ball and O’Connell nearly got in on the left for United before Sessengnon did likewise for Fulham.

Fleck picked up a nasty knock in a clash of heads and needed a bandage to carry on after going down and needing quite a period of treatment.

A stunning passage of play saw the game turn on its head on the half hour. First a horrendous error by Carter Vickers saw his back pass woefully short and OJO latched on and coolly tucked it past Blackman. The Fulham fans had only just stopped celebrating when they had a second. This was a well-made goal with smart passing involving a number of players after the initial United slip in midfield. SESSEGNON advanced and hit a low shot that was right into the far corner giving Blackman no chance.

Frederick and Sharp got tangled up and both were booked for this altercation but soon after it was 2-2. Lundstram made a good interception on Ojo. Stevens carried it forward and after Fleck touched on, CLARKE cut in and fired a low shot under Button. The keeper should have done better and on both goals had some culpability.

Fulham went straight back up the other end and soon were ahead again. This time it came down the United left with O’Connell and Stevens giving Ojo way too much time and his cross was converted smartly by SESSEGNON for his second at the back post. Carter Vickers and Basham both pointed at each other as the youngster stole in. United’s first half defending was wretched but Fulham’s speed of play on the break and the passing/movement had torn them apart at times.

Lundstram was booked after Cairney drifted away from him twice with some lovely skill and then harp’s give away nearly saw Fulham break again. Duffy overplayed on two occasions and then Basham cut not keep the ball in after some good work from Fleck.

After 7 minutes of stoppage time, the fans went for their half time break having seen 5 goals and end to end action. It was the sloppiest half United have offered since Cardiff back in early August. They had never got to grips with the speed of the Fulham counter but at the other end Fulham’s defence had been equally poor.

The second half saw United have long spells with the ball but it often slowed down and sadly with Coutts prompting and Duffy off his game; it was too slow to be put forward and often kept having to be recycled. Fulham slowed it down when they could and the referee did not penalise blatant timewasting that occurred on several occasions.

Ayite nearly got in on the break but saved and then clever work from Cairney saw him break away. United were having a lot more of the ball but with Clarke having to work a lone furrow and Sharp not being able to have an impact; there were few chances coming. Brooks and Carruthers came on for Carter Vickers and Duffy as United went with a 4-4-2 formation and seemed determined to throw men forward. Sadly, this led to Fulham breaking well and twice O’Connell and then Wright had to make tackles. Fleck then did the same as Fulham threatened once again with speed of play from picking off United’s misplaced passes.

United kept on plugging away but nothing was really happening in terms of goal mouth action and after Kamara went on, he instantly broke away and set up a fourth. He chased forward and had a shot blocked but OJO reacted first and hit a shot that deflected slightly off Lundstram and into the corner beating Blackman at his near post. This seemed the decisive moment in the game.

Hanson came on for Wright and he nearly scored after Sharp’s shot was deflected over, from the resultant corner, Hanson headed down but it was hacked off the line. Immediately after this Fulham broke and scored a 5th goal. Once again United had men forward but the pacy players the visitors had meant they always were causing problems. SESSEGNON ran away and beat Lundstram and drilled beautifully into the corner. It was a brilliant hat trick with three superb strikes and sent large swathes of the home fans heading for the exits.

Brooks was trying to go at men but twice he had appeals for free kicks turned away despite clear fouls although his appeal for a spot kick seemed a little bit ambitious. Still with five minutes to play Carruthers hit a deflected effort that went in via a hefty deflection and there was some hope.

There was six minutes of additional time judged to be played which was actually generous on Fulham considering the time wasting. With two minutes of it played, United got a 4th goal. Sharp sent a cross over and Clarke’s header made it a second hat trick in successive home games. The crowd willed on the Blades but Fulham prevented any further opportunities and eventually the final whistle went ended an incredible contest but one United ultimately came out on the wrong end.
United were sent out of the top two and will be hoping they can bounce back Saturday against Birmingham on the TV game on Saturday evening.

United – The late goals and fight back was good but in truth United were given a bit of a spanking at times tonight. We never had control of the game from start to finish and with and without the ball that is the poorest we have been for a long time.

Fulham were the best side we have seen all year at the Lane and rivalled Cardiff for best team we have played but we given a great deal of help. They gave some stupid goals away (keeper at fault twice) and then two late ones but attacking wise they tore us apart at times. The lad Sessengon was superb. He scored three and was a threat all night. Fulham did what QPR did and played 3 up top with two wingers and a roving striker moving in between the lines. They closed us down all game and made sure the defence had to go back rather than forward. We made so many mistakes but credit to them. They controlled midfield for long periods and for the first half saw so much of the ball. I felt at both 1-0 and then also 2-2 we were a tad fortunate as they had gone behind us a few times but equally they gave us time on the ball too.

Too many players were off the game. The basic defensive mistakes all over such as the giveaway for the first and then sitting back letting them run at us. I felt we barely put a tackle in first half and they had a lot of time but they also broke well. They had so many quick players in the front positions and then also overlapping full backs. It looked like us in reverse but with pace.

People will talk about Coutts and sure we missed him a lot. Lundstram is so slow and gives it away a lot. He does not carry the ball and takes an age to do basic things. He also cannot do the defensive stuff as players run off him. He looks out of shape to me and is carrying too much weight. I am not sure he is the answer, short term or long and I think even though Carruthers has his faults he would offer more. Lundstram does not get into the last third but does not protect our third. His main job seemed to be to pick it off the back and then either give it back or fire it aimless long. However, rather than scapegoating him, you have to say Stevens, O’Connell, Wright, Duffy, Sharp all had their worst games for a long time – maybe all season. Carter Vickers had a nightmate. Every shot went in past the keeper although only one I questioned him on. Basham was very average and that leaves maybe Fleck and Clarke as only two who kept up standards. The subs gave us a bit of life but they then broke away as we tried to send men forward. The late comeback was great and nearly saw us get something but probably masks quite a poor performance where Fulham deserved the win. We were sloppy on and off the ball, made mistakes and looked a million miles off the side that we have seen this season. Maybe Fulham take some credit for the way they set up and some good performances but the table suggests they are not that good. I felt we got picked off too easily and allowed their players to dictate. We looked a bit of a soft touch tonight but looked painfully slow in comparison to them. I felt for Fleck who was playing 3 players on his own due to the contribution of his midfield teammates and Norwood, McDonald and the outstanding Cairney bossed things until the final stages.

It was a weird night as like I said you don’t expect so many mistakes and so many poor individual performances but it was odd to see team lacking confidence even at start of game some looked lethargic. Just hope psychologically the injury has not affected us but the whole team tonight seemed to go in their shell a bit and it was odd to see an away side impose themselves. We did keep plugging away and did not have much run of the ball tonight (two deflected goals either way) but we looked a tired group which again was strange after we had an extra day off. I think he needs to freshen it up for Saturday and I would bring Brooks in for Sharp, hopefully Baldock might be back and Basham into the centre. Stearman may also get a chance instead of Carter Vickers who had a stinker tonight.

It is a big game Saturday as we need to bounce back. If we dip again then people will say the bubble has burst and momentum has gone. We need to be bang at it but you would hope several players may respond to poor games and we will not make as many mistakes. I also think credit to Fulham and the manager as they got tactics, shape and how they went about us correct. They are a side that should be ashamed to play like that compared to many other results this season.

Fulham – Made the playoffs last year. They lost a few players but kept some mainstays in the likes of Johannsen, McDonald, Cairney etc and have a lot of real talent throughout the side. The fact they are nearer the bottom than top is a real surprise and they showed that tonight. They have pace, skill and some really good players. The lad Ojo is a threat and Norwood a clever player. Cairney showed some supreme skill and you can see why he is so highly rated.

Jokanovic has been about a bit but did well at Watford and then left there and did well at Maccabi Tel Aviv taking them into the Champions League. He has steadily taken Fulham up the league and got them to the playoffs and close to the Premier League last year but this year has seen a surprising drop off. I picked them as 4th and felt confident they would be around the top 6 so they have some work to do still but I expect them to move up the leagues.

They are better away with counter attacking and pace than they are at home where teams will sit in. Do expect them around the top 6 and probably will have money to spend.

Opposition Man of the Match: Session scored three and a real threat but they had numerous other stand outs. Tom Cairney was very good. A real talent that could play Premier League easily. McDonald did some good things but some poor things too. He is a good Championship player but no more. He is not quick enough nor consistent enough. Despite his time wasting and theatrics with Sharp; Frederick is a good player too. They have such pace and if they attack teams could do really well but they must have not played like that much!

Opposition Weak link: Button. Two poor errors and did not look convincing all night. The rest of the team did ok. I felt Odoi was clumsy and could have had more than a booking. Indeed, the biggest criticism I give them is for all the good skills and pace; they did feign injury, timewaste and try every trick in the book. No need when they have decent players. The ref was so weak and let them get away with it so they kept doing it.

Blackman 6/10 – Weird giving him 6/10 when he let in 5 but he had no chance on the 1st with the stupid back pass. He kind of came but would never have got there and tried to save the shot. The 2nd went in the corner; the 3rd he was left exposed. The 4th it was near post but hit someone but I felt he was a bit slow. Had no chance on the 5th with a great striker. Other than that, he made a superb save at 1-0 but actually caught what he had to and punched one away. He was left terribly exposed by those in front. Stays in the team despite tonight for me.

Basham 6/10 – Up and down and tried but defensively got caught a few times. He made a few poor decisions with the ball and his final product was not there. Huffed and puffed and no real clear errors but a very average game. Sadly, he was nowhere near the worst! Need him back in a more typical position soon.

Stevens 5.5/10 – Felt he was not great tonight. He lost his man a few times, he failed to sense danger and often they got into his areas. He needed to be more switched on and was a bit slow. Going forward he did a few neat things but took too long to make his mind up. Don’t think he was helped by others around him either tonight.

Carter Vickers 4/10 – Had a bit of a mare. He made a mistake early that he got away with when Blackman saved and then the awful back pass that gave them a goal. He then failed to mark on the third. He kept plugging away but even his basic passing was behind his men or his touch was off. He came off as we tried to get more men forward.

O’Connell 6/10 – Real mixed bag. Won some tackles and advanced well when he could but he made some really poor mistakes. He tried to gamble too much and three times they broke when he failed to get to the ball. He knocked it straight to them quite a few times and I felt he was just off his game. He did not hide and kept trying to attack when he could and gains credit for that but basic mistakes at the back cost us. He was one who did keep trying to drive us forward but it was a bit kamikaze (**** or b**t at times and his attempted steal led to the third).

Wright 5.5/10 – One of his poorer games for United. He won a few key tackles but he was sloppy with the ball and they worked out to just sit off him as he would not bring it forward. This meant play slowed down. They did the same with Lundstram and realised their lack of mobility and pace. Twice he gave it away in quick succession before they had chances. Against real pace, which they had, he struggles and did tonight. He did win a few blocks though and tackles but teams will look at how deep he sits and expose that with runners down the wings and the ball behind – which they did.

Lundstram 4.5/10 – May seem harsh as a mark as he won a tackle for the 2nd goal but other than that, he played a few long-range diagonal balls but did little else. On the ball he takes an age and takes 5 or 6 touches to do something simple. He does not carry it forward and lacks pace to move with the ball. They just sat off him and he ended up being a centre half and then ended the game in the right back area where he got horrible exposed on last two goals where they beat him for pace and skill. He just slows out play down. I would rather him give it someone else than take 4 or 5 touches and then play it sideways. He reminded me of gulp…Dean Hammond. Ok, maybe not that bad but the way they just passed it round him and he clutched at a shirt or grabbed a quicker, more skilful player. Cairney made him look a fool several times. We have got where we have with pressing, closing off the ball and quick, fluent football. His play affects both adversely. People will say it’s too early but I have seen him at QPR, Forest and home v Ipswich and tonight. We have won one of those games he has started and he has done little to impress in any of them really.

Fleck 7/10 – Our best midfielder and second-best player after Clarke. Ran around, tackled, carried it and tried to make things happen. Not everything came off but he kept going. He drove forward for the first and involved in the second too. He had no help whatsoever and with the wing backs pinned back, he had to carry the fight. Clarke showed for him but no one else. God forbid if he got injured as it shows how important him and Coutts were/are. Needs better play from those around him.

Duffy 4/10 – Really poor performance. He was totally ineffectual. His touch, passing and all-around play was off. He gave it away or fired it at waist high and tried daft balls. Not his night and lucky to last as long as he did. Been brilliant recently but Fulham had players who have real ability and pace and he could not help defensively either where we got badly picked off when they attacked. Either him or Lundstram had to sit in and help Fleck but we got picked off on the break time after time.

Sharp 4/10 – Not really much of a theat. The ball came off him and he gave it away a lot. He tried to do too much and got crowded out. The defenders he faced were bigger, stronger and faster and he just got bullied. Did not have any chances but did offer much of a nuisance threat either tonight. One of those nights which he will have as he lacks pace/mobility at this level but will always get you a goal here and there.

Clarke 8/10 – Our best player again. Scored three well taken goals, put himself about, led the line and did his best but the players around him let him down. He did not really have any service either and having to create stuff himself. Playing superbly at the moment and 8 in 3 is some achievement. However, if your team let in 5 you face an uphill task.

    Subs:

Brooks – Made some decent runs but not much end product. I am going to criticise him and say he looked for free kicks too much. He got fouled twice and one was given, one not but he needs to get on with the game at times and take the contact. He seems to go to deck a bit easily but guess when you run at pace and are slight it does not take much contact to knock you down to be fair to him. He drifted around and got into a few good areas but not much end product. Their young talent did show that end product (daft to compare as he started) but Brooks next step is to find better final balls/finishes. He is great to watch though and I would start him Saturday.

Carruthers – Ran around and got on the ball a bit; that after he gave it away and they nearly scored soon after he came on. He had a few runs forward and tried to link. He gave us a bit of energy. Scored via a deflection but at least he shot. We do not seem to shoot much outside the box I feel despite us scoring a lot (maybe that vindicates overplaying!).

Hanson – Surprise sub but we had nothing to lose. He put himself about; nearly scored an I felt was ok when he came on. He is alright when we are chasing a game as allows us to get off his knockdowns but not sure he has much of a long-term future and expect Lavery and Evans to be ahead of him when fit.

Manager: Wilder 5/10 – Got outcoached tonight. They got tactics right and played three quick lads that made out defenders turn or pressured them on the ball. They got tight on Duffy and pinned out wing backs in. We did not have an answer for long spells but when we went to a more orthodox line up with a flatter midfield and Brooks out wide, caused more problems. It went a bit Championship manager at the end as we had numerous strikers up and it nearly paid off. Credit for the great fight back and spirit but we looked a bit flat tonight and even when we led we did not start well. The usual pressing and energy was not there and a good Fulham side were full value.

Officials – The referee was really poor. That is two in a row. He booked a few (7 in total – 4 for them) but let some blatant timewasting go all game and never penalised it. He missed some obvious ones (did the 4th official give one foul on Brooks?! – never seen that before and the ref admitted he missed it!) and was just behind the play and slow to react. I felt he was weak all game and never had a grip of the game. They had a spell of 4 or 5 bad fouls and he just let them get away with it and then booked a lad for barely nothing as he knew he had to do something.

Crowd – Another 25,000+ crowd and only maybe 4-500 from Fulham but despite 9 goals I felt it was a bit flat tonight. I was really disappointed with our fans. I wanted them to raise the roof and get behind them but it never happened. The Kop was as quiet as I have heard them. I felt the team needed them tonight after what happened Friday and even though there were some poor displays; they were not helped and it was a poor atmosphere until the closing stages.

Sorry DB only skimmed through that as I'm up in less than 5 hrs think you're bein harsh on llundstram and kind to CCV he was at fault for first 2 goals and maybe the 3rd also,we didn't have the zip we normally have and they did but you only had to look at their players at the end everyone laid out totally knackered that's what you have to do to beat us even when we're not at our best

On a side note was really disappointed with a large part of the crowd who got up and left when their 5th went in,that's the time the team needs your support anyone can cheer when alls well and your winning by 2 or 3 at least those that stayed backed them fully credit for that at least I just wish everyone would support us that goes

Just seen your comments on the fans dint think the kop was too bad TBH apart from the mass exodus near the end and a worthy ovation at the end from those left

In fairness to Billy, he tried hard but as soon as he got the ball, he was challenged by two or three of the opposition. This was obviously a tactic as they feared his scoring record - and perhaps contributed to the space afforded to Leon. Perhaps when teams start worrying about Leon, Billy will get a bit more freedom.
Agree with practically everything else in DB’s excellent report.

I don’t know how fit he is, but think Stearman needs to return in defence. Hopefully Baldock will be back so Bash can go midfield.
With our (very entertaining) style of play, we were always going to be vulnerable against a fast, skillful counter attacking team.
At least we lost to a team that played football and usually kept three up front - a much more acceptable defeat than the one to the horrible, cynical anti-football team that besmirched the once fair name of Norwich City.
Despite last night’s result, I think 36 points from 18 games is a return far better than anyone could realistically have expected. UTB!!!

Agree about Billy last night he got closed down quickly and outmuscled and I thought should have got hooked for Brooksy, who for me changed the game and got us back on the front foot. They were so scared of him they doubled up and he should have had a pen.
Bash will definitely have to go back into midfield, his ball retention and passing ha improved hugely under CW ok he's no Coutts but he'll fill the void. He did get caught for pace last night a few times but he was trying to cover for CCV as well as get forward. Love to know the distances he covers in matches.
First time I've ever stood and applauded at the end of a defeat. As someone else has said, the Tuftt factor.

Biggest concern for me was Duffy having an off game and without Coutts we are over run in midfield. You say you want to see Basham back in his normal position but what is that? He lost Sessignon for the third goal and was constantly done for pace when players ran at him. I would like to see him pushed forward in front of the back four. It was a tactic we adopted a lot last year during games but don't seem to have done it much this season. For me his best game was in midfield against the Pigs. We were sadly lacking someone to break up Fulhams midfield to- night and hardly won any second balls.

Disagree with you about the fans. Despite mayhem on the field we stayed with the team and backed them to the end with rousing applause at the final whistle, thats the Tufty factor.
Agreed mate except for the ‘out-coaching’ it was basic individual errors that gifted them the first half goals and put us in a position that we had to go for it in the second which left us open. Without those errors it would have been a totally different game.

We couldn't cope wi Fulham's pace on't break,CCV had a mare no doubt abart that but Stearman wasn't universally popular before his injury.I don't like losin but i have to say that was a feast of aatackin football but why they felt they needed to tek the wazz, time wastin all 2nd half is beyond me(I'm sure that won't suprise Basil Fawlty the Bolton Mastermind tho)One thing i dint agree wi DB abart is the crowd i thought we stayed behind the players even at 5-2.UTCB
