    Penalties

Steven Thompson, in his 'Herald' column today, argues that penalties 'even themselves out'. They don't. Last season Celtic got 11; we got 4; Partick got 1. And that's just numerically; getting a penalty in the 89th minute when you're 6 - 0 up or 6 - 0 down up isn't as meaningful as it would be at 0 - 0 in a cup final. It's a version of the 'law of averages'; I have no faith in it at all.

Of course penalties won't even themselves out - why would they when a great Celtic side win the league by miles and we barely avoid relegation? It follows that they will also get more dodgy decisions - more attacks = more dives = more penalties.

The issue is that the Old Firm are much, much more likely to get the decisions when they need them - hence why exceptions such as the ICT handball stick in the mind so clearly, they're like hens teeth...
