The political threads are OK when its close season or Notts are sheite. However now we are good again it's time to put them away. Personally I find them extremely tedious. When did anybody 'win' a political debate or argument on the internet? They generally come across as self righteous and bombastic opinions by people with far too much time on their hands. Still you'd know all about that Elite!!! Cheers QP.

To be honest, although I don't have a problem with any off-topic threads (as long as they are marked as off topic of course) it becomes a pain in the nether regions for Cher and I to moderate what can be more a political forum with those argument threads running to massive numbers of repetitive posts.

Maybe we just need a specialist 'Off Topic Threads Moderator' to help us?

On the subject of people buggering off because of those threads, although I sympathise with their frustration (but think they could easily avoid those threads!) I also think it is easy to drown them (the political threads) out by posting more footie threads. Why don't we all make an effort to post footie threads for a week or two to show the folk who no longer post that this board is still alive as a footie forum? I'm sure many of them still read or at least check the front page list. If they saw that we had it back to being football heavy they'd be back posting in no time.

    Thoughts?

Most other forums like to keep the main board ‘clean’ from non related threads and provide a sub board for other stuff.

Unfortunately all the OT political threads on here are all the same in that someone starts a thread, people reply, it then becomes very personal and then the abuse finishes the thread off.

Perhaps if the main board was kept ‘clean’ it may encourage new posters and members to visit the board more regularly, for a newcomer I guess it looks like a lot of playground squabbling. At the moment it’s in a mess and needs sorting imo, this is a Notts board not a political forum.

I do agree that a separate forum for off-topic threads would help. Unfortunately every time this has been discussed the consensus has been that THAT would kill the board. It seems we can't win.

We did try it - I'm sure I'm not the only one to remember the 'Magpie's Bar' forum. The problem was that very few people used it, topics that belonged there were posted on the main board and not moved. It would require 24/7 moderation, and the mods on here (who in my opinion do an excellent job) have suggested that none of them have the time or inclination to do that, as is their right. I would leave things as they are on the basis that very few posters stand out as being regular posters with no 'baggage' (I am the perfect example of that!). Moderating on personal opinion rather than Footymad rules can kill a board in no time, as the Forest board has proved.

    Interesting debate.

Think there may be some chicken and egg stuff going on. There's some political bickering, which many of us arent interested in particularly (or not in the confrontational way it sometimes descends to on here anyway). That in itself drives people away, and these are probably the people who would be posting football related stuff. More of an issue in close season as others have said, when there is a lot of political willy waving which some of us find tedious.

That said, I guess the answer is in all of our hands. Post more football stuff (where's Bass_turd when you need him?), debate politics in a less confrontational way with OT at the start, and rapidly report anything offensive. On that subject, have just discovered 3 or 4 reports from a while ago in my spam folder, so apologies if anyone reported something really bad which wasnt dealt with quickly.

Just realised my avatar needs replacing too

I hate F1 too. And Basketball, what's that all about, the tallest team wins. My daughter's school make her play it and because she's rubbish, she gets a C for PE, a C that sits there colour coded, spoiling an otherwise good report.

Back to this site, you just have to accept people will be right or left or centre and will argue over the colour of ****e. The reason people have left in droves is more down to the stagnation of the Trew period and the emergence of Twitter and Facebook to rule people's lives (if they're under 50).

Rather a ***ist comment. The term 'willy waving' suggests that only men (or some transgender people) are capable of strong political opinion. I will however concede that the term 'fanny waving' does seem rather impractical. Maybe we could compromise and in future use the term 'genital waving', as that seems to include everyone.
