    Hmm not the full story.

A player is in an offside position if, when the ball is played by a team-mate, they are nearer to the opposition's goal line than both the ball and the second last opponent.

ie if you are behind the ball when it is passed you can't be offside. The direction of travel itself isn't be the determining factor (in theory a pass could go backwards, a player in an offside position could go back and get it, and he'd be offside). But 9 times out of 10, a backwards pass will be going to a player behind the ball, who will not be offside even if there isn't a defender between him and the keeper.

Second last opponent 99% of the time being the last defender unless theres a keeper up for a corner sitution or something

If a pass is played forwards , there must be a minimum of two opposing players ,one of whom may be the goalkeeper , between the payer receiving the ball and opponents goal .
If the ball is played backwards , ie a cut back ,the player receiving the ball cannot be offside even if no opposing players between that player and opponents goal .

Unless the recipient was offside in the first place he can be offside

As i said a defender between the keeper and the attacker(ie 2 opposition players)

Cant be offside from a corner because it is assumed that everyone is behind the ball or at least in line with the ball when it is played. Direction of travel of ball totally irrelevant BUT a common error. I've won a few pints on that.

BUT - Celtic used to do a wee move when they had Larrson. Player A would take a corner and B would stop it a yard from the corner flag. A would then swing it in. Player A SHOULD have been given offside if no defenders on the goal line. Was never given and they got away with it for years until they were pulled up for it in a European (before Christmas) tie.

The other thing about offside is that the linos are told to give the attacker the benefit of the doubt - and in both the GMS goal and the Considine non-goal the correct decision would have been goal even if the freeze frame had shown them to be in fact offside.

Guys explaining the offside rule to other guys. The world has gone mental

The easy way to remember it is this. If Aberdeen are attacking, it’s onside. If they’re defending, it’s offside.

    I would say he's offside:

It's a forward pass, likely intended for Stewart and GMS has nipped in.
