You should not have felt compelled to limit your remarks to the detriment of fuller explanation. What cannot be denied is that your major historical feats predated and terminated (1973) before DUFC's began (our first cup final 1974). However, our reaching the UEFA Cup Final stands head and shoulders above anything you have achieved (or will ever achieve now). You identify 'who did it first' as some kind of all important differential? A proud statistic no doubt, but surely this is an insignificant observation when you consider the amount of cup final appearances United have appeared in compared to Dundee? And that is only a start in weighing up each club's history.

The difference between both sets of fans is clearly this:

    1) For many years DUFC lagged behind DFC in terms of status and the winning of major honours. From 1974 onward things began to change dramatically and DUFC fans rightly swelled with pride as DUFC steadily caught up with DFC in success stakes and greatly surpassed them in footballing achievements. Instead of trying to keep pace and compete with United, Dundee FC went steadily into decline, resulting in depression and frustration dominating the mentality of their fan base.

    2) Instead of having a team to be proud of due to footballing achievements, DFC now has a dominant generation of fans (ie post 1973) who can only take pride in the demise of their city rivals.

In short, DUFC fans witnessed their club rise up and not only equal the great footballing achievements of their city rivals, but eventually surpass these achievements by a clear mile at the very least. This is surely an honourable thing to be proud of (after all it is about 'honours.') Our club rose up to your club's level (at that time) and far exceeded it. We then headed north as your lot headed south. On the other hand, DFC's fans can only rejoice in DUFC plunging down to their level, perhaps even sinking to lower depths (time will tell). A great percentage of the Dee support know of nothing else and that is purely down to experience.

United fans take great pride in eventually equalling and overtaking the footballing achievements of their city rivals. Dee fans take great pride in a once proud club (DUFC) falling from grace to a point below their own now lowly status. True success and honour is still very fresh in every DUFC supporter, but luckily Dundee supporters can refer to 45 years old TV footage of their last League Cup win and visit the library to read about their sole Scottish Cup win in between columns describing the advent of mechanically propelled vehicles and the coming telephonic system. The country was at peace. The Boer War was over.

As you can see from Uniteds current state fans have zero control over what chairmen do! It was not the Dundee fans fault the club went into Admin in fact the fans stepped up and saved the club twice.
Roll back the clock a little and you have a statement from United we are in a strong position and dont need to sell players, then GMS, The turk and Armstrong gone and so the decline began. Another example of chairmen being chairmen and the fans having no influence.
