We should not want to run them at a profit sinkov.

By your own admission, privatisation of utilities just does not work; "And then there's the funding question, we're up to our eyeballs in debt and getting deeper into the mire every day!"

But we shouldn’t run them at a loss either and that’s the past experience of state run organisations partly because of unions trying to use them to hold Governments to ransom. Maybe you can show me one that has made a profit. For every one of them there will be at least 10 that don’t.

exactly - more artful deception of gobdribble trickery for the minions to lap up, give em a government that "LOOKS LIKE"...........because that's what it's all about - how it looks, to be fooled by the looks - all an illusion, meanwhile it's business as usual in the land of Smoke and Mirrors.

I was half listening to the radio the other day so I don't know who it was, apparently one of the rail networks had a £3 Billion hand out a couple of years ago, on its last audit it made just over half a Million £'s, which nearly all was paid to shareholders in dividends FFS !

I can see the attraction of public ownership...but.

If they are not being run for a profit then they inevitable become bloated and inefficient...and lose even more money. And who will pay for the losses? You got it.

And, remember, if a service becomes publically owned then the boss (with all the responsibility) would be a political cabinet minister.
So...at the moment that would be Chris Grayling (ex BBC and other TV company chappy) or Andy McDonald ( Serious Injury Solicitor).

I don't know about you, but I don't feel that either of them are qualified to oversee a railway.

nationalisation has actually been used by governments of all political orientations in the UK for different objectives, both long and short term.

In the past, government has often used nationalisation to provide infrastructure, such as transport or communications, that support enterprise, as well as bailing out failing firms.

Among the key lessons of previous nationalisations are:

Nationalisations of failing firms have been less successful than nationalisation to provide infrastructure
The cost of nationalisation has varied considerably
A key problem for nationalised firms is the scale of investment and innovation
Nationalisation's effect on the economy often depends on whether it has inhibited competition.

Prestwick airport has been nationalised in Scotland for political reasons to stop it go bust on SNP watch - it loses millions and they want to sell it but can’t. British Leyland, is one of the worst uk ones. More examples here some good.

We're getting deeper into debt because of spending commitments in the public sector BT, not because some utilities are privatised. If the railways are nationalised for instance and run at a loss, as they surely will, there will be less money for the NHS. Be careful what you wish for.

And yet the Socialist answer to massive debt is to spend more and more. If that clown Corbynski got any sort of power you would see what a real debt looks like, Blair and Brown left the coffers dry and they are right wing compared to this clown. Corbyn is just a flash in the pan and will be gone like a fart in the wind when people see what he is really all about, he may be able to bribe school kids with unattainable promises of free money and there is always the lazy and feckless that will vote for him but the reality is, he couldn't beat a weak Prime Minister and fell well short. The only chance he has is if Diane Abbot counts the votes.
