I have also visited Turkey and had a wonderful time. It is not yet an Islamic state and I hope it never will be.

Me too and I agree we had a great time at Ephesus and Kusadasi but it’s not the secular non burka wearing state it became under Ataturk under the new Prime Minister and is significantly involved in Syria. Erdogan has sacked a lot of educated people and is trying to move from a Parliamentary system to a presidential one with him as President. Things will only get worse I fear.

Erdogan believes the country's Islamic beliefs should not be hidden. Last month, he said Turkey's balance of democratic values and religious beliefs should be an inspiration to others.
"In a country where the majority is Muslim, we let democracy rule in its most advanced form and became an example for all Muslim countries.”

Yes, I have visited the "underground village", it really is a fascinating place and not very far from where I live in Menxia, Sanmenxia City, Henan Province.
In addition the surrounding countryside is beautiful, stunning ! :-)
If you ever plan to visit don't come during winter, it's very, very cold !
