Thread: Ten most iconic post war English footballers.

  1. #1

Ten most iconic post war English footballers.

The passing of Cyrille got me thinking about this. I came up with this 10:

    Billy Wright
    Stanley Matthews
    Nat Lofthouse
    Tom Finney
    Bobby Moore
    Jimmy Greaves
    Bobby Charlton
    David Beckham
    Geoff Hurst
    Cyrille Regis.

Honourable mentions to Peter Shilton, Laurie Cunningham, Duncan Edwards.
Go on, tell me who I have missed. The most contentious on the list I feel is Beckham. Maybe Hurst, though a World Cup final hat trick does count for quite a bit.

I would have included G. Best in there.

Gordon Banks ahead of Beckham or Hurst for me but I agree with the rest.

Hurst was like Paulo Rossi....one standout tournament,I don't remember kids wanting to be Geoff Hurst when I was a kid.

If you're talking icons is there a place for Gazza or Lineker?

I couldn't quite find a space for Geoff Thomas though.

Surely if you are talking of iconic English players Frank Worthington and Rodney Marsh should be there?

Can't argue with any of those.

Beckham has to be there because he is known to more people around the world than any of the others. I was in Japan for the 2002 World Cup and there was Beckham mania amongst gthe locals.

Surely the great Duncan Edwards would have to get into the Top Ten, that is in in my humble opinion.

When I were a lad one of the main names of the time was Kevin Keegan.

I'd put Roy Race in front of those two.
