Motherwell knock Hamilton out the Cup

Motherwell were given easy passage into the fifth round of the Scottish Cup as Hamilton were eliminated at Fir Park. The early gift of an own goal was bettered by a needless penalty resulting in a 2-0 derby win for the Mighty 'Well. - External Link

We controlled the game for the most part and outbattled Accies. Over the piece, we deserved to progress and Accies can have no complaint. The new lads all played well although they'll improve as they settle in. Neither of the goals could be described as being well worked but we'll take anything that comes our way. A decent team peformance that gives us some hope for the coming months.

A massive victory. Build on it with a midweek win and the confidence will be back.

The only thing that matters in the Cup is progression and we did what was needed. However, the performance was awful in my opinion and the ease of the victory was more down to how poor Accies were rather than us playing well. I thought we were flat and as ever, wasteful in possession. Tanner was most definitely our best player but he was the best of a bad lot. It's telling that it took a spectacular own goal and a penalty for us to win because we were toothless in attack otherwise and could have played all day without scoring had Accies not given us a helping hand.

I wouldn't disagree with that. The 2 errors apart it was heading for a goalless draw. The other side of the coin is that Accies made at least 2, and possibly more, serious errors and we didn't. Success in the Premiership, as opposed to the cups, is often about not making mistakes.

A cup tie that was always going to be difficult particularly when three new signings make their debut without having seen or played in a competitive match for the club before. We also played without a natural wide player to provide crosses for the likes of Main and Ciftci. IMO these two will cause other teams problems when they have got fitter and have scored their first goals for the club.

All I can say about yesterday's performance is ... we're through to the next round.
