    Jimmy Armfield

Very sad to hear he's died.

Too young to have known him as anything other than a football summariser but he had one of those avuncular voices you could listen to for ages. I suppose this goes hand in hand with my 'modern footballers' thread in that he is one of the last of a dying breed (no pun intended-sadly it's all too literal). Always spoke in a measured, dignified way and clearly knew the game inside out-came across as a good old-fashioned gentleman.

Contrast that with the utter shite that comes out of Jermaine 'he was absolutely within his rights to go down Jenas' mouth, or the high-pitched whining of Steve Claridge or the arrogant self-aggrandising of Robbie savage.

Loved listening to him with Alan Green.

Very good right back for Blackpool and England,he lost his place to George Cohen just before the World Cup,win in 66.I saw him play a few times and he was a solid defender.

Only know him as a radio voice but will be missed.

Was really sad listening to Alan Green talking about him on the radio, he got quite emotional. Saying how Jimmy wouldn't let him come up and see him, kept putting it off. He didn't want Alan to see how the cancer had made him look so ill.

    RIP Jimmy
