    John Rankin

There has been plenty of discussions recently about the performance of our skipper John Rankin so what do we think he brings to the Queens team?
I must admit I was pleased when we signed him out of the blue as I always thought he was a quality player having played at he top level in Scottish football over a number of years. No one can doubt his commitment as well as his fitness as he can certainly get around the park for the full 90 minutes but what qualities does he bring other than that and urging on others?
All I see is a stopper in the middle of the park breaking up the oppositions attacks and being a general nuisance. He offers no creativity for the forwards whatsoever and can be a problem when he comes back into the defensive areas because of his lack of control sticking his foot and head in where it can hurt. Is this enough too warrant a place in the team?-Discuss.

Jacobs and Thomson are our best centre mid partnership I think. As said , Rankin is still enthusiastic and fit but can't see him offering much else.

Thought you might jump on the bandwagon with that. Although Rankin was industrious enough up until giving away the penalty, on reflection after watching brief match highlights I have no idea why he handled as Martin had the shot covered. Queens captain then resorted to breaking up play in midfield with sliding tackles, as his dirty shorts showed up. Naysmith reckoned Fergusson for Man of the Match. Doonhamers Travel Club opted for Martin. Someone else thought Cameron and I suppose he was best of a bad lot, so I will change my mind and choose him too.

Rankin is weak link and playing a division above his capabilities. Giving him a 2 year contract was a mistake.

Still don't understand why he dived & handballed that shot on Saturday. It was embarrassing from such an old professional

There is no doubt that Rankin is enthusiastic and non stop but as a spoiler/disrupter of the opposition play rather than creating anything for the team. That role is needed but should it be at the expense of any creativity is the question I am trying to put across here? Most teams do have a player doing this role but again most of them do bring something else in addition to simply trying to stop the opposition.

Still time for Thomas to make the same type of impact that he had last season.
