U23, U18 and other youth sides

I can understand that as a club we might not be able to compete with the big clubs in respect of youth and young players but it looks we can't even compete with the likes of Crewe Alex. If we cannot compete at this level then we are certainly wasting time, effort and cash. Get rid or at least look at our scouting system - it just isn't working its pathetic

You obviously aren't up to speed with what has happened this season in the fact that we have now moved up as an Academy 2 level which means we are playing against teams, such as Crewe who are renowned over the years for producing young players who always move on. The under 18 team in the last two matches has been decimated because a number of the players had to step up to Under 23 level because of injuries and the fact that two excellent Under 23 players were with the squad at Swansea.
The Under 18 team are standing 3rd in a very tight league and their improvement over the last two seasons has been good.
They play their home matches down at Gawthorpe, usually on a Saturday morning, and it is well worth giving them your support. However, don't expect to see any budding Paul Gascoignes because they aren't about --they have none at Newcastle either ----and they are Academy 1 status.
Chelsea and Manchester City are paying a lot of money to young players (plus large incentives to their families) and consequently lots of players go there and then eventually end up being loaned out --criminal it may be --however, that is modern football.

Do we need another thread for this? What’s different to the last one? Maybe we can run updates on their results
The under 23s need to win their next game against Swansea to qualify for the cup. The squad was depleted for the last game which they lost at Colchester because O’neill Was in the first team squad due to injuries and two players were taken to Swansea for the experience - which may come in handy for the next game.

So what you are saying is that Crewe are better than us at producing good young players. If that is correct then our scouting system is poor and we cannot attract players who can compete with Crewe. Look whatever level anyone plays at it is about results and the players we have are clearly bot good enough - if this was the case at first team level we would be in Division two and not being able to compete. Either the coaching is not good enough or the players (scouting) are not good enough may be both

Lancaster Crewe have been developing players since the 1990s.
They and Dario Grady was in the news recently over child abuse.!
The club have produced over 75 footballers for their own club
Players who passed through the ranks at Crewe include the England international players Geoff Thomas and David Platt and Welshman Robbie Savage, and Northern Ireland internationals Neil Lennon and Steve Jones (Platt was the most successful, totalling more than £20 million in transfers and captaining the England team).
All these were youngsters signed from other clubs, but Gradi also had considerable success in nurturing Crewe's own trainees - notably full England internationals Rob Jones, Danny Murphy, Seth Johnson and Dean Ashton and Wales international David Vaughan.

Approximately 75 former youth players have also made it into the first team at Crewe. In April 2013, in the team's final game of the season, manager Steve Davis fielded a team whose starting 11 were all Crewe Academy graduates.
Ashley Westwood is a graduate of theirs.

A point against Swansea at Curzon Ashton on Monday, 26 February means the Clarets will be guaranteed a top-two spot and a place in the last 16 of the under-23 competition.

alf --the under 18s played on Saturday against Leeds and they had a weakened team because some of the players had been with the Under 23s on Friday at Colchester.
The Under 23s lost today and, once again, they had a weakened team and also included 3 trialists in the starting line up.
The Under 18s play against Nottingham Forest at Barnfield on Saturday and will hope toget back to winning ways, having beaten them 3-2 earlier in the season.
Both these teams are very much in transition after the step up in level and also for the need to rebuild after the damage done to our youth set up in recent years.
    Results are largely immaterial.

It sounds like the under 23 team was weakened and had three trialists in it so maybe a few u16s were in the under 18s but I’m making excuses.

I just read the social media threads at the top of the page Ashy, just got the wrong date for one of them.lol.. Results are of little consequence,it's more of bringing the players on and giving them experience although a win or to does no harm to the ego..
