Watched the debate on Sky last night...

And they were discussing the role of these Directors of Football..the ones who go out and get the players like our very own Orta.

Think it was Jamie Redflapps who made the point that its these DOF's who are bringing in the players but yet it is the manager who gets sacked if they/the team don't perform.

WBA owner has just sacked their Chairman and Chief Executive for the poor season/results they are having.

Is that how it should be?

Sack those who bring in the players rather than the manager/coach?

Called me old fashioned but I still think the best way is to trust your managers judgement with players and therefore no need for a Director of Football.

The buck should stop with the manager but it hardly seems fair when its players who have been picked for him who are not doing the business.

totally agree , a director football is about as much use as a chocolate fireguard , its just another exhorbitant wage to pay for a bloke in a suit , who is totally clueless about what is required . it is just a posh name for what was known years ago in the game has a scout.

the manager should have full control over player recruitment, otherwise its not his team , that is the problem down here and why we wont get a decent manager worth their salt, while ever orta is still at the club.

Tough one to call Rev, as more european managers and foreign owners come in they'll want to run along DOF lines, but hopefully the manager gets some input, can think of some good/bad:

    Mark Hughes: Poor at recruitment
Kenny Dalglish: Wasted all the Torres money, Liverpool in general had many poor * managerial signings
Newcastle Utd: Whoever was scouting/recruiting in France a few years back did an amazing job
Steve Walsh: Supposedly the man behind all the great signings at Leicester, tho most Everton fans think he is rubbish there.
Watford: Too many managers but recruit well enough to stay in PL
Chelsea: Abramovich chose Torres and often doesn't back managers requests

Was thinking about Gary Monk... his signings for Boro looked poor, possibly because of his poor man management, the players obviously have some talent, hence the prices. Does it make it easier for Pulis, who is a better at managing players to get more out of those players and he doesn't have the pressure of it being his chosen signings not working.
Also the ever shortening spells as a manager, means a manager would be having to deal with other managers choices rather than the clubs choices... dunno whats best
