Hard to imagine how a very good footballer (Nolan) who played his part of some great footballing teams thinks that we need to play 'hoof ball' - must be the general opinion among the football elite that hoof ball is all the lower league teams are capable of.

Given this a lot of thought as the season has progressed, and I think that playing "the long ball", with a simple set of instructions, was the quickest and most effective way of getting us out of the doggy~do 12 months ago....it worked, and with surprising results at the start of this season as well.

As the crowds started returning, and AH was cranking up the publicity machine, there was pressure on Nolo to put a bit of entertainment on the table, instead of kick~n~rush...plus a lot of teams had figured us out and also our "big 2" were now a year closer to getting their free bus passes.

With hindsight, Yates had been propping up the battling side of midfield...we tried to replace him with players of more silky skills.....the infamous "you are in for a treat" tweet by AH before the home game to Exeter backfired dramatically as we lost 2 home games on the bounce, crashed out of the FA Cup...and were beaten by Barnet, who look like a Division 5 team in everything but name.

In summary, we are a team in transition....Nolo is not a fool, he knew hoof~ball was only going to work for so long but unfortunately we have not yet learnt to adapt to trying something different, even for parts of a match.....Nolos angry comments after the Barnet game included "there are players out there back~chatting...but cannot string 2 passes together".....mmmmm......is that cannot or would not.....interesting.

Finally, someone asked the other day why we could not pick up a class striker in January?.......if you were a decent goal~scorer, would you want to come to a club that plays Route One for 95% of the game....most decent strikers like the ball to feet occasionally, a ball into the channels, a winger crossing from the byline ......it is damned difficult to score a goal when your back is to goal, two huge defenders are climbing all over you... and the ball is coming down from 60 feet above you with snow on it.....Houdini was not a great striker!!

On performances, form and awful signings we'll finish mid table. The decline has started. Especially if we don't win tomorrow night.

Our amazing start of 8 wins and 1 draw after the Coventry game has kept us in the top 3 up to a couple of games ago. In reality, since the away win at Exeter towards the end of September, our form has been that of a mid-table side. Splitting the table into two - up to and including the Exeter game and since then bears this out.

We do have players within the squad who have the 'quality' to be part of an automatic promotion winning team. Unfortunately we don't currently have a starting 11 that possess the 'quality' being debated.

We do also have the coaching staff who albeit still learning their trade have shown signs of having the quality to manufacture an automatic promotion finish. However, they do seem to have lost their way a little in recent weeks.

So to answer the question, yes we do have the quality in part to win automatic promotion, unfortunately it's the part that doesn't have that quality that will see us finish outside the top three.

Grant grabbing the team by the scruff of the neck after coming in for some criticism.

....which again is down to good management. It was clear to everyone that not only had Grant gone "off the boil" for the last 5 or 6 games, but he was getting niggly off the ball and getting silly bookings....sitting him on the bench for 65 minutes obviously worked.

Similarly for Noble, he has not had the desired impact since his return from FGR, today he literally changed the midfield after his intro on 69 minutes.

Both players need to keep this higher level of intensity against Cheltenham and FGR away.

Yes it's about time he started earning those Championship wages we're paying again!
