Substitutions with a minute to go

What was the point of Burke coming on as a sub at 89 minutes. If he was meant to add some pace I would have subbed him for Phillips in the first half. Perhaps I could understand it if we were leading and wanted to waste a bit of time and slow down the game, but to bring him on and disrupt things when it was all hands to the pump is ludicrous. I can't understand why we don't give him a fair chance and play him from the start. It's complete madness.

Totally agree. Phillips is a waste of space. Burke has had an average start but surely he needs regular football to bring out the best of him. He must get in ahead of Phillips though.

I'm with you on this one SB.

Burke clearly unsettles defences, he gets me off my seat anyway. When teams get a bit leggy around the 70 min mark onwards he's the last thing you want to face, I'd certainly like to see him get at least half an hour but this 89th min thing basically says we don't trust you, which is doing his confidence no good at all.

Is he ready to start? Why not? Let's face it what we're doing now isn't getting us anywhere near safe.

To my mind he's not done enough to command a starting place but I do agree that bringing him on with 20-25 minutes to go would be a positive move. He has got pace and with tiring defences he could cause problems.

When he gets to the by-line the ball he whips across is usually a good one probably too quick for our slow thinking strikers.

I agree with you all that he should be given a decent enough time to make a difference.

The worrying thing for me is we have paid a lot of money for a player that doesn't seem to have any football knowledge he tends to wander around aimlessly not knowing what positions to take up and only seems to react if the ball goes straight to him, although I do agree he couldn't have done any worse than Phillips on Saturday.

How can you say he has no football knowledge when he rarely gets the chance to show it. If he does wander about, it's because he is looking for the ball, unlike others in the team who seem to do all they can to avoid it.
