    History Books On The 'shire

Any of you local amateur historians have any suggestions for me.

I spend most of my time at home wandering about with the wee man around historical sites, this time home I was at Aikey Brae, Crovie, Bass of Inverurie, Loanhead of Daviot, Easter Aquorthies, Fyvie, Slains Castle. The wee man loves it and so do I but id love to know more about the history all through the ages. Battles especially, like Harlaw, Inverurie, Barra,Lumphanan and also more on the Picts

Any help would be much appreciated

Is Aikey Brae not just an abandoned quarry where the carnies used to go? Away to be a stop over for the gypos now.

There is a book called Hidden Aberdeenshire, maybe worth a try.

Did you go visit the old Abbey when you were near Old Deer? Its not too far from the stones at Aikey Brae. Its obviously a ruin, but fascinating nonetheless. Within nearby Aden Park, there is also a museum with history on the Abbey and some really interesting info on the "book of Deer".

Weird, just talking about this and up pops a update in the P&J. Your new neighbours are moving in shortly. I take it you will not be applying for the gypsy/traveller liaison officer position?

Hidden Aberdeenshire: The Land by Fiona-Jane Brown is good, although she blurs the boundaries a bit, the scamp.

Her previous tome, Hidden Aberdeenshire: The Coast is a good read too.

A new book "Aberdeenshire: A New Perspective" by Andy Hall has just been published, but given that Sir Ian ****ing Wood, attempted wrecker of the Trainie Park writes that foreword, I'll nae be touching it, and undoubtedly it'll contain the usual modern-day cultural imperialism pish with The Mearns subsumed, along with Eastern Banffshire in "Aberdeenshire". "Banff, Aberdeenshire". For ****'s sake.

Are the chronicles of Harlaw nae a bit hazy? I think there's been much debate about the fecht itself, although it's generally agreed that The Lord of the Isles had to **** off back to his fiefdom after he only achieved an away draw, saving us from having to wear ****ing plaid, adopt a patrician clan system and speak Gaelic.

And did Billy Ray Cyrus nae commemorate the site of the great horse-trading fair in Aikey Brae-ky Heart?

I actually attended one of Andy Halls photography courses a few years ago in Stoney. Got me into photography big time and i have never looked back. He is a fantastic photographer and great writer as well. I have read a couple of his books and have enjoyed them.
