This reminds me of a question set by our local radio station before the internet was in full swing...

Which league football club plays its home games closest to the Mersey?

99% of the answers was between Everton,Liverpool and Tranmere but it turned out to be Stockport County but obviously they have been relegated since then

The question I'd never heard/knew until recently was: What was the name & club of the first footballer to be banned for match fixing?

Having thought more about it, this will be the answer because alf is in the know about this and he likes Portsmouth!!
You are right Ashy,my dads best mate during the war years was Len Phillips who played for Pompey.. Both of them were stationed at Eastney Barracks at Pompey and were Royal marine commandos..Len Phillips was a great player and Pompey legend by all accounts ..

My wife’s family are from Pompey, but no football connections except my wife’s gran and sister played football there as part of the WW1 effort to collect money for injured soldiers. The women’s teams got big crowds then.

Must admit, I do like Pompey, always had a good away day there, really decent fans. And Fratton Park is good, they always get good crowds.

Yes lots to see and do there. Had a holiday in what was the naval dockyard but now a shopping mall and executive flats. Wasn’t sure if the bridges had an impact but then I remembered the Clachan Bridge over the Atlantic which joins Seil Island to the mainland in Scotland. And the one connecting Denmark and Sweden.
Loved the ships, though much of what was the Royal Navy is laid up there looking rather sad.
