    Reading 1 United 3 - report

Quick report based on watching on a ‘feed’…..

The Blades got back to winning ways with a well-deserved win at lowly Reading. United dominated large parts of the game and were in complete control at the break thanks to Billy Sharp and Mark Duffy but a goal quickly into the second half from sub Richards gave the Royals hope. More Blades chances were missed and then unbelievably Reading got a penalty after a soft award from the referee. Simon Moore who had errored on the goal made amends with a great save and then soon after Sharp stole in to score a typical poachers goal. Reading felt United should have returned the ball as they kicked it out but there was no clear sign of a Reading player needing treatment. In truth, United ran out worthy winners and with better finishing it could have been a hammering for the home side. The Blades missed at least 4 or 5 guilt edged chances with many being one on one opportunities with just the keeper to beat.

Manager Wilder made just one change despite the criticism from the defeat at Hull with Mark Duffy coming in for Ryan Leonard. Ricky Holmes was on the bench but there was still no place for the injured David Brooks.

The game began with blue lines and a dusting of snow on the field and we began with a yellow ball against a green and white (snow) pitch we made it quite hard to pick out! The match began with McCleary pulling up quite early and having to be replaced by Richards. United were hungry from the off and won a number of midfield challenges and Duffy was getting on the ball early. Clarke’s chasing down of a defender saw him rob Moore and he was in on goal but agonisingly slid the ball the wrong side of the post with just the keeper to beat. Soon after Duffy and Sharp combined and Clarke rounded the keeper but was blocked out and tried to square the ball and Reading cleared. United won a corner soon after and were well on top. The opening goal came deservedly so soon after. Clarke made it with a run and inviting cross and SHARP met it and his first effort was well saved but he reacted well to turn home the rebound. It had been a very good start and the goal had been coming.

The domination continued with the defence on the front foot, Fleck and Evans winning everything and the front two looking a threat in behind. Already it was night and day from the performance at Hull.

Reading had their first chance on 20 minutes when Clement had a low shot saved from Blackman. It may have not even been going in but the keeper was right to turn it behind. Sharp was nearly in at the other end and then Evans fired just off target as the Blades continued to dominate. However, they had a blow on the half hour as unbelievably both Clarke and Moore hit the floor at either end of the field and led to treatment for both players. Both had pulled up after previous incidents; one where Blackman had saved earlier and seemed to feel his back and was struggling after this and Clarke for a run where he seemed to pull or strain a muscle. Both could not continue and Moore and Donaldson came on. It was a real double blow in a game United had dominated.

Fleck showed great skill to nutmeg a player and run away but his final ball was cut out as United still were showing all the quality in the game.

The game became scrappy for a spell but more good work from Fleck led to an early chance from Donaldson but he shot wide. Still United continued to control things despite the injuries and the second goal finally came and what a beauty it was. From play down the left, DUFFY picked it up came inside and hit a thunderbolt that fairly arrowed into the top right-hand corner of Mannone’s goal. It was a superb goal and he ran to celebrate with bench.

Soon after and it should have been 3-0. Sharp got in and checked back but shot narrowly wide with his left foot with just the keeper to beat. The Reading fans were now loudly booing their teams’ performance in which the visitors had completely taken them to the cleaners and should have been out of sight. The half time whistle came soon after this.

The second half saw Reading come out more determined and it was not long before they were back in the game from nothing.

Stevens gave the ball away and after Kelly sprinted away from Basham; the United man pulled him down and was booked. The free kick was in a dangerous position and Bacuna got it over the wall but Moore was able to get to the ball. Sadly, he could only push it out a few yards and in came substitute RICHARDS who smashed high into the net and Reading were back in a game they should never have been in.

United tried to come again and Fleck’s great run saw him upended on the edge of the box and a booking for Van de Berg. Duffy took it but it was a poor one and straight at the keeper from an excellent position. Baldock was then played in by Sharp and was in on goal but Mannone saved. It was another one on one wasted!

United should have been in control but suddenly the game was in the balance when the conceded a penalty. Kelly pushed the ball into the box and then seemed to overrun it and Stearman stood his ground. The Reading player fell to the floor and the referee after some time gave a penalty. It was an incredibly harsh decision and United players were incensed. After the complaints; Bacuna took it and hit it hard to Moore’s right but he guessed right and sprang to push the ball away. It was a great save and the United players duly mobbed him. It was not long before they were celebrating at the other end.

The ball was kicked out by Reading as they seemed to think a player was injured but the player had actually got up. United took the throw on half way and after a neat move, Fleck sent a delightful ball over the top and SHARP beat the offside trap and clipped home past the advancing Mannone who came out. A few Reading players appealed that the Blades should have returned the ball but it seemed they had simply switched off and United caught them out in a sucker punch. From a game that could have been 2-2; the Blades were now 3-1 up and a more realistic score line. Sharp celebrated wildly with his teammates in front of the Blades fans as the Reading fans gave him a different kind of reaction.

Sharp’s excellent night continued as he got away from his man and squared but Donaldson prodded wide at the near post. Evans came on for Bacuna for Reading who now were struggling to put two passes together and United were now firmly back in control. Fleck drew another foul and booking and then Smith came on for Ilori for the home side in their final change.

United had another golden chance as Donaldson got in and had just the keeper to beat but clipped it wide and then soon after Fleck shot wide. Despite the domination and chances missed, Reading had a good chance when Martin shot narrowly wide after good work from Kelly again.

Duffy was limping and came off to be replaced by Leonard before Bodvarrson shot wide after a corner under pressure from Stearman. The final moments saw United see out the game professionally and they kept the ball well as Reading looked a side well beaten. Four minutes of additional time saw little of note happen and the Blades could celebrate getting back into the top 6.

United – A great performance. Everything we did not do Friday; we did tonight. We competed from the off and were bang at it. Won all the loose stuff, tackles, competed, chased and harried. Won headers, blocks, got to the ball first and then picked up the second balls. On the ball our control, passing, touch and overall assuredness was all so much better. Every player played better and everyone put a shift in. We could have been 3-0 up after 15 minutes as we swarmed all over an albeit poor Reading side. We went in 2-0 up but had missed lots of chances and that was only negative. Think they had one chance first half and this was nowhere near as good as ones we missed. Second half they scored and they had a lifeline with Moore making a mistake pushing the ball into the incoming player from a save. After this we then missed more chances before they got a penalty. You felt here we go but Moore made a super save and then we made it 3-1. After this we had more chances and even though they had a couple; they still never really looked like coming back. We won at a canter in the end.

So many good individual performances, Fleck, Sharp, Duffy, Evans stood out but the defence all played well too. Every player really upped their effort levels and performance. We saw more of the United earlier in the season with O’Connell, Bash and the two wing backs bombing on. Fleck was running at players and Sharp looked a threat all night. We looked the gung ho, fearless side of earlier in the season and with a surer touch in front of goal could have been a walloping. Reading fans booed their team frequently but United deserve masses of credit for this. They pressed all night and were just nag at it. Complete antithesis of Friday. A huge turnaround. Big credit to the players. Sure many will say fans change their opinions and the bi polar fan will be discussed but to me we were crap on Friday, awful. Tonight, we were great and deserve all the plaudits.

We now need to carry it on Saturday – we may miss a few players but Burton are no great shakes – still we have played an extra game on a hard surface (will have been by the end) and have to repeat this performance. That is the challenge. Get as close to those standards set tonight the rest of the way. If we do that; whatever happens Wilder and us cannot complain.

Only negative was the double injury blow (and Duffy but looked less serious) when incredibly both Blackman and Clarke pulled up at the same time (opposite ends to the pitch). I thought that just sums up United’s luck but we got the win and hoping not too bad (Knill says they are not but muscle injuries usually need at least a week to recover so doubt either will be back for Saturday?)

Reading – For all the credit I give United and we made them look awful I felt; they did not help themselves. Looked as disinterested tonight as we did at Hull. Not bothered about competing for loose balls, gave it away, played a lot of long balls and were just so far off the pace. They had some bad luck also when McCleary went down injured early on – seemed to fall on the pitch and twist. However, they never got going and could not cope with our pressing and intensity. I recall us doing the same in the first half at the Lane and thought Stam would have them ready but they just folded again and were lucky to in just 2-0 down. Clearly can scored goal and attack as the 3-3 v Derby showed but defensively they take chances and give the ball away and leads to chances. They tried to play it out early on and clearly Stam wants this but not sure in a relegation battle this will help. After the crowd got on their back, they started clearing it longer and the crowd got on their back even more. Towards the end, their ire was at Sharp, the ref, their own players and anyone who would listen. It was a small crowd but became a bit toxic and the players wanted rid of the ball a lot. Reminded me of the United team under Adkins. They clearly have some decent players and even though have lost some they have many of those that made the Playoff final but things seem to have unravelled this season and they started badly and have just never recovered. Stam may not survive too much longer judging by the reactions. They have some experience and some decent players on paper but do not seem a team.

Opposition Man of the Match: Kelly the lad in midfield is a real talent and was only one who looked anything like. Cheated on the penalty but he was still a threat and got away from us a few times second half. The rest of the team not sure anyone stood out really. The keeper did not even make many saves; we

Opposition Weak link: Take your pick. The defence was awful, the midfield slow and weak and the attack powderpuff. Even the keeper did not save much (most shots wide!). The lad Moore is highly rated but had a bit of a mare tonight. I did not even realise Chris Martin was playing till he had that shot wide near the end. I have always liked him but becoming a bit of a Championship journeyman now.

    United Ratings :

Blackman – Cannot really score him. He had nothing to do other than flick one low shot away and then pulled up – the same time as Clarke. Seems it might have been his back which was the issue before wasn’t it? Like with Clarke if a muscle injury could be out for some time.

Baldock 7/10 – Decent. Got up and down well and was able to support the attack. Had a few runs in behind and had one great chance that was saved when he should have scored. A few times like Stevens let his man run in behind but overall decent.

Stevens 7/10 – Thought he was better than Friday and used it much better. He got forward well and showed some nice passes and interchange. Still too far off his man at times and he gave it away in the build up the free kick long before the Basham foul and Moore mistake but still a poor error. Will not use his right foot and frustrates me when he spins around so many times to execute a left foot clearance.

Basham 7.5/10 – Determined performance full of passion where he made tackles and did all the notty gritty stuff. It was his foul that led to the goal but he kind of had to take it as player had got away. He got booked for this which was unfortunate and just because the ref had warned many of our players previously and he was the fall guy. A few slices (his first cross sailed over) but he was committed all night; won challenges and so determined.

O’Connell 7.5/10 – Thought he was out best defender. He was good on the ball, driving forward and overlapping like earlier in the season. First half he was like another winger – we have not seen this for a while. He defended intelligently and threw his body in the way and I felt Martin and Bodvarsson had very few chances.

Stearman 7.5/10 – Played well overall stepping out and using the ball intelligently. Got in blocks and interceptions and limited them to few chances. I felt he was very unfortunate on the penalty and the lad just ran into him and was looking for it. I was amazed the referee gave it. He then got a bit lucky when he caught Bodvarsson after he shot wide; that looked more of a penalty that the one he gave!

Fleck 8.5/10 – Thought he was excellent and close to Man of the Match with Billy. Could give it to either. He ran the game at times with his running, touch and took the mickey several times with some delightful skill (two nutmegs) and won several free kicks with strong runs. Lovely ball control and can move it from left to right and vice versa.

Evans 8/10 – Very good. Won tackles, broke up play, used it when he could and overall was all over the field. He was shocking Friday but today a different player and was bang at it. He won the loose balls, won headers, used it well and linked well with Fleck and Duffy. He showed real energy and I felt was determined to show he was much better than what he showed at Hull and he did. Set his standard tonight.

Duffy 8/10 – We seem to play much better when he plays and of course that was the case tonight. At the heart of most good things we did and scored a stunner. Just picks the right passes, lovely to watch on the ball and keeps the momentum going. A real threat as he drifts round the field. Gave it away a few times with overplay but you can live with that. Seemed to pull up also near the end – hope it was just a tweak and he is ok for Saturday. Ridiculous he has only scored 2 goals this season with his talent and the two he scored were both sublime. Should score many more. Faded a bit near the end as he often does which explains why mark is not quite at level of others such as Fleck and Sharp who did it for 90 minutes.

Sharp 8.5/10 – This mark may seem high to some but I thought he as great. Yes, he scored two poachers goals that he took really well (missed a few too) but he never stopped and was relentless all night. I felt him and Clarke were a big danger to start with and set the tone. I disagreed with Wilder when he said that they were not to blame Friday – thought they were no better than the rest really. Today Billy led by example. He got the jeers from the crowd for the third after the ball was not returned but this was a while after – not sure he would stop at this stage – surely Fleck or thrower (Stevens?) should get it as much (see above/below for more on this). Back to his performance, that is Billy at his best, irritating defenders, irritating opposition fans and generally being a pest. A total nuisance and a goal threat. Loved it. I/we/you write him off at my/our/your peril. He will always score goals.

Clarke – Playing great despite the misses. He robbed the defender and then squirmed a one on one wide when he should have scored and then rounded the keeper and dithered a bit. However, he looked a real threat and never stopped running and harassing defenders. Despite the chances he then set up Billy with a run and great cross. He pulled up and it seemed it was a hamstring or calf as he signalled straight away. Sadly, that could be a few weeks out if a muscle injury and a shame as he looked more at it today – we have 3 games in a week from Saturday.

    Subs:

Moore 7/10 – Might have been a 5 if it had not been for the great penalty save. He came on and had little to do first half and then second half he palms a free kick into the path of the onrushing player who just had to lift it into the net. I was furious as it needed pushing behind or pushing with more power away. It was a really poor mistake and after his error at Wolves that led to his ban; I was not amused. Then he saved the penalty. It was hit hard and not a bad striker but he got across and made a superb save. After this he saw one shot go narrowly wide but did not have much more to do. I do feel Blackman has played better than him this season and he is making too many mistakes and I do not have same confidence with him in goal (command of area) but credit to him for the save tonight. It may have changed the game and kickstarted our season.

Donaldson 6/10 – Thought he was our weakest outfield player. He held it up a few times and did not get much protection (one foul at the end when he was clearly tripped up was ridiculous when the linesman stood next to him just ignored it). Overall he has to do more. He missed a sitter when he went in one on one and clipped it wide. He also made poor choices when given the ball and slowed it down too much when we had chances to break and score. Needs to work harder when he gets game time for me and looks a bit languid.

Leonard – Came on at the end for Duffy and was put on the dangerous Kelly and did well getting tight to him and restricting many chances at the end.

Manager: Wilder 9/10 – Slagged him off Friday for his team selection and how the team performed and he felt same way and gave them the roasting they got. He wanted a reaction and got it. We put in maybe our best performance this year (2018) and won 3-1. Despite the penalty let off and any controversy over the 3rd goal; United won and won well. If the game had finished 5-1 it would have been a more realistic score. We missed so many chances. Still, overall the team came out and showed him what they can do. They proved what they are capable of and showed a lot of character tonight. They came out and were bang at it from the off; won battles, played good football and competed all night. A Wilder type performance if ever you could see one with bold, attacking football and bravery showed both physically and mentally in everything we did. We play like that the rest of the way we won’t be too far away from sneaking in the playoffs. Also fair play to him that we made 2 subs and we managed to regain our composure and save for a bit of a dodgy spell early second half were the better side throughout the game.

Officials – Thought the ref was inconsistent throughout and missed a fair bit both ways. He should have booked one of ours a long time before we did. We were cynical tonight and I loved it after our weak, soft touch performance but we spread the fouls out but they were all good fouls if you know what I mean. He finally booked Basham for one nowhere near as bad as some of the others. Donaldson was rightly booked for a foul and kicking the ball away in one incident. Idiotic.

He booked 3 Reading players. Van De Berg and Clement for cynical fouls on Fleck. The first one was awful and just took him out right on the edge and then booked the keeper for complaining after the third goal.

The penalty was a farce for me. The lad Kelly just ran the ball out and ran into Stearman. He stood his ground and he went down like a sack of spuds. It was a blatant attempt to con the ref and it worked. It was a pathetic decision. Justice was done with the save. This for me was far more of a ‘cheat’ job than anything that happened on our goal.

A lot will be made of the 3rd goal – it seemed like Sharp and the centre back were having a running battle and a few fouls were exchanged. One saw their player come off worse when he seemed to foul Sharp and he went down. They kicked it out but the player had already got up. We took the throw and they were very much playing on; I am not sure they all stopped. We played it through and scored. They were chasing round for the throw and the through ball and only complained after it went in. Don’t like to see us score if we did it by unscrupulous means but not sure we did. As I say the Reading player was up I think when the ball was kicked out. They decided to kick it out. The physio did not come on so not sure why we would give it back at this stage? The player leapt to his feet quite quickly before we even took the throw. If he stays down fair enough but he did not.

He then let a few trips both ways go without fouls and it became difficult to know what he would penalise next. Not a great night for Andy Davies. Not a name I have heard of. He seemed a bit slow to react to what was going on. Granted not helped by a tricky playing surface. Also, why play with a yellow ball against backdrop of white for big patches of the field. Surely a brighter orange would have been better?

Crowd – 6,769! Wow. Yes, it was cold and yes maybe tricky for some to get to but that is appalling. If the game was at the Lane tonight, it would have still been 20,000+. Always felt Reading are a bit of a plastic club and the crowd reinforces this. The Blades took maybe 700 which was down on what it might have been but still decent really and they got behind the team and nice to hear the tributes to Shred amongst the love for the two others of our own, Billy and Wilder. Deserved to see the win and performance for the effort in going down there.

If they've deliberately kicked it out then we should give it back end of,goal or no goal,we'd be up in arms if it had happened tother way round

Good report as always DB so thanks once again. My only gripe is that I thought we backed off the intensity just after half time and gave them a little too much room.
As for the throw in and goal, I genuinely did not think they’d put it out, it looked more like their man miscontrolled and it went out and I didn’t see anyone in the floor.
I’ll have to see if it’s in the highlights.
However, balls to them, Reading deserved absolutely nothing and we were well beaten.

I dedicate last nights victory to the Memory of the late gr8 SHRED,luvly to hear our fans singin abart the Legend.I was amused when their fans were chantin cheats after the way their lad went darn for the penalty.I don't know if they kicked the ball out on purpose cos they were givin it away all neet.We shudda been 3-0 up before the 20minute mark and could easily have had 6or7 but it was a good performance and i agree wi DB FLECKY was very good,my MOTM.UTCB

I thought Baldock was at fault for their goal. Moore has got down and saved the free kick and if Baldock tracks his man he'd be putting out a good save for a corner.

Also big praise to JOC for generating the space for Duffy to pull the trigger (goal of the season so far).
