    Ot. Death of an Icon

    Roger Bannister. RIP.
The word iconic is used far too loosely but this man deserves it.

I’ve run the same track that he achieved that magnificent feat on and played rugby just round the corner many times...long story.
An icon indeed but respectful memory rather than great sadness should be the tone for the death of an 88 year old. Fine innings.

Although I believe he never won an Olympic gold, he's iconic not just for the feat but for his work as a neurosurgeon which he always felt was the greater achievement.

His 4 minute mile broke through "impossible" barriers.

Bob Beamon's feat of missing out on 28 feet something and going straight to 29 feet plus was possibly even more of an impossible barrier.

Bannister was a gentleman. We need more of those.

he broke the record in Oxford, which suggests your rugby playing would have been of the real 15 man game rather than the breakaway 13 man version?

This was the Miracle Mile at The Commonwealth Games that year between the 2 men who broke the 4 min barrier. Bannister and John Landy. Dr Bannister stormed home to pip Landy in his final major race of his career. He retired at the end of 1954 to pursue his work in medicine.

Is there anybody of his standing to take over his mantle? Incredibly intelligent AND sensible.
