We can never prove it, but it was a group of girls who started it, i was 14 and standing right behind them and joined in, so i was one of the first to do it. Only a few of us did it to begin with and others were craning their heads over. The Brummie called more and it was played again and everyone did it.
I think we may have been playing Chelsea, if we weren't it was pretty soon after, and we did it and they didn't. Then as now fans copy others so Chelsea would have adopted it within days.
When it was played at Wolves the North Bank would hiss and boo. I think they adopted it as a pee take as they did with I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside, which we started at Pompey in the 68 cup game, and Knees Up Mother Brown, which was another anthem of ours.
We did Ring of Fire as a pee take in the play off 2nd leg, we never have done it since.
It doesn't really matter who starts a song, but it's annoying when Wolves fans old enough to remember claim it as theirs, when they know they didn't sing it until at least a season or two after.
Chelsea have a better claim,..but it wasn't them either.
Hollywood are buggers for trying to rewrite history too.
