Thread: Tony Currie Way

    Tony Currie Way

At the end of yesterday’s meeting Mr McCabe reminded shareholders that it was the 50 year anniversary of TCs involvement with the Club. Despite an enjoyable dinner evening they were still looking for other ways to celebrate this and anyone with any ideas should contact him at which point one shareholder shouted name the Kop after him!

KM pointed out that there had also been other great players during his years supporting the Blades, not least Jimmy Hagan and Joe Shaw. However, the difference with TC was that In addition to being one of the best ever players, he had returned to work at the Club for many years when his playing career finished. They had therefore already given some thought to naming a stand, not necessarily the Kop, after TC.

Interestingly, he then said that they had become aware that hardly any properties on Cherry Street actually have a Cherry Street address. It seems the apartments facing the car park all have a Bramall Lane address. Therefore they had applied to the council to change the name of Cherry Street to ‘Tony Currie Way’.

Unfortunately the Council had turned this down on the grounds that they only allow Sheffield streets to be named after people who have died!

I guess Chesterfield Council think differently as the road at the side of their ground is 'Ernie Moss Way'.

The council need to change their policy on this,I think it’s an excellent idea.

Question,if you get a petition with enough signatures do the council at least have to debate the matter?
