It does, but after a bit of googling it's a bit different from the way it started here, which was "During the first two stagings of the play-offs in 1987 and 1988, the four teams involved were the three clubs that finished directly below the automatic promotions positions, plus the club which finished directly above the automatic relegation places in the division above". All games were played on a two leg home and away format including the final (no Wembley in those days). In Scotland the top team goes up, the third and fourth play each other for the right to play the second placed team. The winner of that game then plays the final against the team just missing relegation from the division above. The winner of that game then stays up or goes up.
