It's polished and shined up on one half of the ball. It's to create swing (I think).

That's absolutely correct Whicka I polished one side and dampened the other so it was dull with spit on my fingers sweat used to help the shine used in small amounts....not all balls will swing in the conventional manner I simply turned them round and they would sometimes go.

Hi mate, i'm ok thanks. Just about to head up to the shrine. Must admit I'm numb to the results now.
Funny I was an off spinner. So never did get why the quickies were so anal about the state of the ball. Played for a few local sides in my distant youth til someone introduced me to beer. Didn't help I played for Hanson's Brewery at one point.
